Federal criminal investigation opened into Key Bridge crash

The FBI has opened a criminal investigation focusing on the massive container ship that brought down the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore last month — a probe that will look at least in part at whether the crew left the port knowing the vessel had serious system problems, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

The news of the criminal investigation, which one official said is being handled by the U.S. attorney’s office in Maryland, came the same day that multiple private law firms separately announced that they had been retained to represent the Baltimore mayor’s office and some of the men who were working construction on the bridge when it collapsed. The moves signal an escalating effort to seek accountability and determine what caused the crash that left six of the eight men dead, a question that both the independent National Transportation Safety Board and the Coast Guard’s Marine Board of Investigation have been working to answer in separate inquiries since the collapse March 26...

Five submerged vehicles, including three passenger vehicles and a transit mixer, were detected using sonar. Emergency services also used drones and infrared technology in the search. The bodies of two of the maintenance crew were recovered from inside a red pickup truck: a 35-year-old Mexican national and a 26-year-old Guatemalan national. They were found at a depth of 25 feet (7.6 m) below the mid-section of the bridge The search was suspended based on the condition of the debris and risk of further collapse. On April 5, the body of a 38-year-old Honduran national was recovered from a submerged vehicle. A 35-year-old Guatemalan national, a 49-year-old Salvadoran national, and a Mexican national remain among the missing. On April 14, the remains of a fourth worker were found in one of the construction vehicles. Whilst they have been positively identified, their family has requested their identity be withheld.

    Really?

It's to determine if any Federal laws were broken.

    Simple enough for you?
So, if there was an accident like you so strongly you need to read your post 224 and try to read to
understand instead of reading to reply. I have never said it was a terrorist act. I was putting out
different scenarios of what could have happened, not what did happen.

Again, read you post 224 and this time try to remember what was written to start the FBI investigation.
And this time, again, read to understand.

Believe it or not, I ,kinda, think you know how to open your mind and understand what YOU wrote.

Crossed many bridges from Fl to Tx this last weekend. She looked for barges on the approach. Luckily, none. One (actually 4 tied together pushed by a tug) did pass under the Vicksburg bridge before we crossed. Whew. As I posted early in this thread, people doing what they do - poorly. Elec problems when the ship was tied up, 'eh boss, it OKY-doky'. Power goes out 'it oky-doky boss'. Someone here said pilots were on board at the crash( I doubt that) per rules. Yup and ships are supposed to be good to go when they leave port also.

If it was an accident like you said, why did the FBI open a criminal investigation?

Multiple reasons, just like they open a homicide investigation if you shoot an "intruder" in your home. Several times over the years, so called intruders were guests that the homeowner got into a conflict with and shot, usually over drug transactions.

All indications are that this is an accident. The FBI will be attempting to verify. Even if an accident (unintentional), criminal negligence may come into play.

Same reason car "accidents" are officially referred to as "crashes".

It was likely unintentional, the result of a mistake or lack of care, but it wasnt an "accident" unless things beyond the relm of reasonable care caused the collision. Those acts or omissions whether mistakes or carelessness may be (likely are are) criminal.

In the same way someone may have a tire blow, then swerve and lock up the brakes and cause a crash, they should (imo) get criminal citations for their incorrect handling of the accident which then caused a crash.

By the post 224 posted by @majormadmax. He posted a link that read in part states
that a grew member found a mechanical issue, reported it to the Captain that might/would cause a issue if not repaired/fixed before leaving the port. The Captain ignored
this and left anyway. I am not, repeat NOT saying it was terrorist, but if the ship had a
issue that would/might cause the ship to be unmanageable and wreck, then it was not an
accident or terrorist attack. It was criminal. Which led to the FBI investigation.
