With an ar pistol with a 10.5" barrel and with a extended stock on it the overall length would be 33" But with the stock not fully extended the length is 26.5" What do I write down as the over all length of the rifle. Would I write down 26.5"-30"

10.5" barrel would be 29.5" overall with a standard M4 stock. Unless you're going with a non-standard stock, 33" would be too long.

It's goofy ATF rules. Rule of thumb is on a M4 style rifle, barrel length +19". You're looking for stock fully extended to the end of the barrel. Any welded on accessories count, any you can take off do not count. So a welded muzzle device would add a little length (why people pin and weld to 14.5" barrels to get the 16" length.) If the muzzle device is removable, it doesn't count towards the length of the rifle. That all being said, FN or whoever else could count it. So on a 10.5, the ATF is looking for the length of that RIFLE (per their silly ideas) = 29.5. However, companies may look at the rifle plus x, y, z. Kind of like if I used a big magnet to put a metal box on top of the truck roof. Technically, I didn't make the truck taller...
