I am moving to Texas in a month and have some ammo and firearms I want to bring with me to my new home I am using PODs to move, and I was thinking of locking them in their own crate and putting them into the POD and just shipping them that way (seems simple).

But if there are any suggestions, what are the best ways to move ammo and firearms and remain compliant with interstate laws, etc?

When we moved to Texas years ago, we used Uhaul trucks to move our stuff; it was cheaper than moving companies at the time (unlike now  ). Two truck trips for our household stuff, and we sold/gave/threw away a lot before moving (bought new furniture when we bought our house). Unloaded into a prearranged 30' climate-controlled storage unit, and flew back for each trip. One trip in-between those two was getting my pickup truck to TX, and that was when I moved my long guns collection, safe, reloading stuff, and ammo. My son and I drove non-stop. The guns were in my truck, some in cases, many wrapped in blankets, along with ammo, and the safe and the bulk of the ammo was in a Uhaul box trailer. I had 1800 lbs of ammo and reloading components and the moving companies I got quotes from wouldn't touch it. And I did not trust them with my gun collection. Stored my truck, with the guns in them at my friend's garage, and the ammo in my storage unit.

Our final Uhaul truck run I had our handgun collection on board, and also towing my wife's car. Again, my wife and I drove non stop. The whole move was spread out over a couple of months. And we did not lose one single thing, not one item damaged in the move. We had my son's college friends help with unloading on each trip.

For firearms, I lock/case them up in an easily accessible place (so I can take them to hotel room). My EDC stays with me.

Stuffed a Stack-On cabinet full, wrapped them in blankets to prevent banging/clanging together, then threw a blanket over the cabinet and piled a lot more shit on top of it to hide the cabinet. EDC (and a couple spares) stay with me.

When I moved I towed a uhaul trailer and made my own crates. Put your guns in cases and put in crate. Same for ammo just make an ammo crate. Install handles that two people can move. If you’re in the Dallas area I’ll help you off load.

    We hired a moving company,

When they came to do the estimate, they saw my gun safe. The guy was nice enough to remind me that NFA items need permission to go across state lines, so I shouldn't forget that.

He also reminded me that because the moving company won't transport firearms, they obv won't insure them against loss during the move.

He said that if I didn't mind not having insurance from the movers on some of my firearms, I could pack those firearms in their cases and put the cases back in the safe. On moving day one of the movers will need to look in the safe, and if you tell him that the contents are just empty gun cases, company policy requires he accept that answer -- he cannot require you to open the gun cases to prove they're empty.

Since my firearms are covered by a separate policy, I didn't need coverage from the movers, so I was happy to have them move most of my firearms in their cases, inside the locked gun safe, buried under a ton of my wife's furniture, inside a locked moving truck.

The rest I kept in their cases in my vehicle. Brought them into our hotel rooms overnight for our safety and for protection against theft. Coming from CA, you'll only have CA transport laws to deal with -- if your stuff is GTG from a CA legal POV, you're GTG in AZ and TX, too. If you're taking some crazy route, check state laws in those states. Once you're out of CA, you can carry without a permit (unless, again, your route is crazy, and for the 10 minutes in New Mexico make sure it's open carry unless you've already got a carry permit from some state), so drink deeply of your Second Amendment rights in the Land of the Free.

Without knowing how many guns and how much ammo, and all the attending accessories and such, it could be very different based on such details.

Are we talking a few guns and ammo, or hundreds? Different amounts of either could mean different methods to move them.
Well I don’t want the ATF to flag my post, but let’s say a good amount…

I don't care to know the specifics or the actual number, since that is none of my business, but I simply asked a question. How is the ATF going to "flag" your post over an amount of guns?
They won’t, don’t worry about it. I don’t even own any guns. All hypothetical.

Yes I am leaning towards this route. I will probably end up trying to keep most of it with me. I won’t be in NM very long, basically from AZ to Texas in one leap is my plan.

    Out here by the lake!
I moved in state last year, 3 hours away. Moving companies wouldn’t touch my ammo & reloading components for hazmat reasons. They wanted all guns crated at extra cost. Luckily I have a friend who has a large child support payment, and he has friends will to work for cash.

As far as having your guns in your vehicle with you that just not practical for everyone. I will point out in Texas there are bandits that target hunters on the roads during hunting season. If you choose to use your vehicle scrap of any firearms related stickers, and hope you vanity plates are not gun related.

Not knowing how many guns you are transporting does not help mowing about personal firearms. My ass sure as hell doesn’t want to get pulled over with out of state plates, with my collection to explain to some drug task force, who are hell bent on seizure.

I guess if your not moving a safe you might not have enough guns to worry about. Let Insuresance worry if something happens. Also coming from Commiepornia you not likely to have a collection of NFA.

Now if your collection is worth a huge amount crate them up store in a bonded warehouse & have shipped once your established.
