ok guys im having a thought, and would liek it to turn into a brainstorm

.22 cal super colibri out of a standard 16~ inch barrel is nearly silent. less that a daisy airgun. especially in a bolt action. these things are so handy! i am a big fan of a small bullet in just the right spot ( very accurate)

but i was thinking that little 20 gr bullet is actually a little less than small. (again i'm not talking velocity and size as much as accuracy) and would like something a little bigger to drop on target. but still pretty small most likely a small pistol round. i was thinking maybe a .32 acp in my 30-06 bolt action. it would be heavier than the .22 for sure, now would the longer barrel speed things up? or slow the bullet down is the question. i wouldn't mind velocity around 5-600 fps,

in fact that is kind of what i am going for here:

reasonably quiet report (as close to super colibri as possible)
    subsonic
    substantially heavier bullet than 20gr

    ideas?

I don't know a ton about it but you just have to look at your burn rate on the powder and case capacity. Bullets getting stuck in barrels is not uncommon when playing with this stuff and a I assume your 30-06 barrel is at least 24+ inches.

This is not exactly what you are talking about but this is information I think everyone should read that plans on dabbling with things in this realm.

That is a good read, I am also interested in quiet rounds I have used the Aguila SSS Sniper Subsonic Ammunition in my 10/22 before and while it doesnt cycle its pretty quiet and not bad on accuracy. The best part is its a 60 grn round. Based on midways site its trucking along at ~950 fps.

I use that same ammo. It is fairly quiet. I'd give it a 5 on a 1 to 10 scale. Use it on possums.

In the long run would it be cheaper/easier/better to just drop the coin on a stamp and a can and run a reasonably large caliber that doesn't require special loads or adapters?

    eh, maybe.

and the novelty of a can has definatly gotten my attention, as a matter of fact i am having my .22 pistol and my 9mm carbine threaded.

the thing is that i want quiet without a can as hence this thread's title.

i am thinking maybe a longer barrel woudl help as well. maybe a 22 inch or so would help muffle a .32 down to reasonable levels, also, i should look into a long a
barrel .22 and play around with the SSS loads.

but that would keep me from being able to work up custom loads as rimfires are damn near impossible to load/reload

would i would love to see a centerfire version of the .22 lr or .22 wmr....

I wanted to dabble myself with 45 long colt level action rifles... I have a can though. Keep us up to date on what you go with. Remember guys sound is subjective and describing it and judging loudness is very hard to do from person to person. my 2 cents.

I've read about it, but just used 9gr of Trailboss in a .308 case with a 185 gr bullet set on top.
