Tactical Classes Question

I have been wanting to take some tactical shooting classes. I've looked at the pics of the magpul class and those guys seem to be outfitted with quite a bit of gear. Slings, holsters, harnesses and pads; I'm assuming that stuff is warrented or they would not have it. I just don't want to be undergeared or overgeared. Any opinions?

IMO, those classes are "over glorified" IDPA etc.. courses. All you need to do is find a range that will let you move and shoot at the same time and set up different "scenarios" for whatever you think might happen. Or just go to an IDPA etc... match.

You don't need lots of gear to do tactical shooting. If you want all the gear, it can be fun, but the point of tactical shooting is to better prepare you for self defense. You can do that with minimal gear. Dont' let the gear scare you away. If want a tactical class, go do it. You will not regret it.

While the courses of fire may be glorified IDPA, USPSA... stages the instruction you get on how to handle them correcly is not. Going to an IDPA match will not hurt yu, but its not the same as taking a class and being taught how to corner, how to transition weapons...

WRT the gear. Its nice to have, but not necessary. If you look at all the schools, they only require functional firearm(s) appropriate for the class, a bare minimum of mags, holsters, mag carriers... None require you to purchase stock in Blackhawk. Having the fancy doo dads is nice, but the gear does not make the shooter. Nor does it limit/enhance your ability to learn from the class.

I have been to several "tactical" handgun classes, and they have definately sharpened me up and better prepared me. I wore my carry gear, comfortable shoes, cargo pants (to hold cargo pockets full of ammo) a ball cap and the usual safety gear.

I take a vest to wear when working on drills in extra close proximity to other shooters.

Other than that, I don't use high speed, low drag stuff and defensive pistol classes.

Maybe it is warranted and maybe it's compensation for something.


The best course of action is to ask the instructor for a recommended gear list. You could also tell him your current gun set-up and ask his advice.

If you are looking to set-up a longarm, that should be done & tested well before showing up for the class. I like to keep things simple & robust.

I like to train with all of my regular load out as much as possible. That's easy to do with pistol classes, just adding ammo capacity. Maybe you need to add a little more gear for a rifle or shotgun class. I would suggest keeping it simple, like a go bag.

What area would that be?

I have a standing offer to train with anyone who wants to join me when I shoot in the basic survival gun fighting skills. Drawing and shooting being the most important IMO.{followed by finding appropiate cover, and exiting the area} I will also work on shooting and moving and shooting from cover.{ the moving and shooting would be more instructional than example on my part as my achilles tendon in torn and I am in a fracture boot}

My terms are simple ...........just listen and be safe. I charge nothing. I also do not work with more than two people at a time{ yeah , I said four earlier this year but had two good ankles then}

I am very interested in your credentials (not challenging, just wondering what kind of military you are from) b/c I am interested in the training and learning of the techniques you are talking about. I've been in the navy for 11 years but was only able to get paintball training on a ship from an old recon guy who thought he could be a SEAL and didn't make the cut. I am interested to know where you shoot that allows drawing and moving while shooting. I am stuck at Red's South for the time being due to being in EE school at UT. Time and money are a problem until I graduate in December. Well, I guess money will still be a problem if the wife stays at home. I've done some reading - from Plaster to Stanford to Suarez, but nothing beats someone just showing you or pure experience. - thanks GM2

Im sold! I love guns but im a bad shot. I would really like to learn some new stuff. The only training i have is watching all the Rambo movies in one day. Where do i sign

I take tactical classes and I like them very much. If I had enough time and money, I would take a class every day. Hoji, I would be glad to train with you.

not his real name, he is one of the guys who works at Spectre Firearms in Spring, few of them have a place they go shoot out your way, figured it might be yours... and yes he is an interesting guy who performs a VERY nice trigger job on a Beretta 92....

I am off work every other Friday-Monday. Mondays are usually the better day for me to train this time of year but Sundays are ok as well{hunting season}
