    As others have stated, he probably likes the different height settings to easily adjust to the trailer and weight he’s pulling. Beats lugging around two or more different hitch offsets. A 7000# loaded lowboy is gonna squat the truck more than say a three rail motorcycle trailer with a total weight of 1000#. If I had more than one trailer that I pulled often, I would have a similar setup

    Looks like the truck may be lifted a little so the flexibility of drop is probably the main reason, not tow capacity. The hitch that’s on my truck right now is “overkill” but I bought it for my last truck, and there’s no reason to buy a new one for each truck. what I have now will work well no matter what size or height truck I have in the future, regardless of its tow capacity.

    Just me maybe but I'm thinking that thing is going to turn into a plow if he drives through a good dip in the road. Of course I live in an area of over 1200 miles of dirt roads and live 4 miles back from the closest pavement and dips and holes are a common thing here.

    and it's gramps for the win! I have an adjustable hitch for my minivan.
