I've always called them spanners, and the only one I have is too small for that. I'm going to make a more sturdy one just in case this ever comes up again.Solid idea using a needle nose as a pin wrench.
They put them on dry.I've had a few like that in my lifetime and it was always the first oil change with the factory filter.
What year model is your truck? I have a 06 and the fuel filter is not too bad to change. Your truck looks like the engine is further back and a pain in the ass to reach the filter.

I like following your progress.Tweaked a few things and mocked up the front end. Going to move the factory cross member back a little bit.
