What kind of snake is this?

We were out at Government Canyon walking the dog when I came upon this snake lying across trail:

It moved off into the grass by the time I secured the dog and got my phone out. It was about four feet long, without rattles on its tail.

Speckled King snake very nice to have around, it kills pit vipers!

Looks like every rat snake we've seen on our property. They get much bigger than that specimen too. They do eat venomous snakes in addition to rodents so don't hurt little slither friend if you can help it.

Same as this. Neighbor called me as she was scared of this guy on her front porch. Rat snake. I said don't kill it and they are good snakes, also tend to climb trees which this guy immediately did.

Leaning toward Texas Rat Snake because of the size and pattern. They come in several different color phases, and will look a lot darker right before shedding.
