Academy has the rossi Rio Grande for $399 with a scope or the Marlin 336w for $379 with no scope. I own both, the Rossi is a better gun. The Marlington rifles leave a lot to be desired, and Rossi quality and fit and finish is awesome. I use the Rossi as my deer rifle (got one this year) and the marlin as a brush gun.

Check the pawn shops and look for a JM stamped marlin. They can be had been 3 to 500. Most likely closer to 300.

I have a Marlin 30-30 that I inherited from my dad and wouldn't part with it.

However, I recently picked up a Rossi 92 in 44 mag that is a great gun.
Its my first ever Rossi, but based upon that, I have zero problems with the brand Rossi.

    Why 30-30?
Lots of really good and cheaper to shoot calibers available.

.357 mag out of a carbine kicks ass at 100 yds and under.

I've had two Marlin 30 30's and currently have a Winchester. I prefer the Marlin/Westernfield/Rossi types if your going to run glass. The Winchester is lighter and my favorite for iron sites.

I've got a mid eighties Winchester I'm debating selling to make room in the safe.

Main debate is every time I get rid of a 30 30 I end up buying another. Great brush or truck guns. Dependable and tough.

    Way out here
You really shoulda bought the one I sold a month ago. It was a cherry. Every American needs a .30-30. Greg, I'd stick with Marlins. The others are ok, but there's only one top dawg.

1950–1980 were the best years. I see them for sale all the time. If you send me your email, I'll forward links as I come across them.

Among those who have spent considerable time with Marlins new and old, anything made after 2009 is widely considered junk. For about $40 more than that, a man can buy a Marlin in find used condition, from an era when they were made with pride and care.

    Good to know.
