I just bought a new ar-15 and I started looking at scopes and realized quickly that after cashing out $2200 on a rifle, (I am a college student) that I am a little strapped for cash :/ Does this look like a decent starter scope to ya'll? Bushnell 3-9x40 AR Optics Riflescope (Drop Zone-223 BDC) AR93940. This is my first gun so I do not know a ton, any tips are appreciated :) Also, I am mostly colorblind so a red dot scope does not work for me.

Well I actually spent $1500 buying it new from a guy at my church. But the retail is $2200. It is a POF P415.

But in your op you said you paid $2200. I'd put more money into the scope. Have you looked at the leupold mark ar scopes? I believe they're discontinued and can be had for around $350. I snagged one up in March. Pretty clear and nice scope for the money. Came with ar15 rings

    Out here by the lake!
Buying starter scopes are a waste of money IMHO. Good glass aint cheap But well worth the money spent. As you get older & your eye go to shit the higher investment cost is money well spent.

I put a similar Bushnell on one of my ARs. its on a 16 inch Bushmaster with a RRA trigger and Ive killed lots of varmints with it and shot a couple of hogs last year. I've got no complaints and it's held up to moisture and freezing temps while hunting.

The Bushnell will get you by.

At a later point, if you decide you need more you can upgrade.

The elite scopes still cost a pretty penny. But you can get a good scope with good glass pretty inexpensively these days. Much better value than twenty or thirty years ago.

I have 2 guns with scopes. In both cases, the scopes cost significantly more than the rifles. A Burris on one and a Nightforce on the other. My shooting friends, did as you are doing (buy a lot of gun and put inexpensive glass on top of it). When they get behind my glass, they kick themselves and can't believe the difference. We spot out to 300 yards (the farthest distance at a private range we shoot at) with my Nightforce easily. Save your money and put good glass on it; you will be happier in the long run. In the meantime, get comfortable shooting the gun the way you will shoot it.

I have a Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40, picked up on sale for $200. I would have to spend five to ten times that much to see a discernible difference.

Since I am not shooting at 1000 yards (as obvious with a 3-9), I do not need better.

Someone shooting at extreme ranges at dusk may need better.

I shoot 1000yds with my 10x Leupold Mk4. The clarity is amazing. I can see the target better with that Leupold at 10x than I can with my Nikon Monarch at 16x.

An optic that would fit that rifle but not be too expensive would be something in the Vortex Viper line — top-notch glass for about 1/2 of top-notch $$$. Or like someone mentioned earlier a discontinued Leupold Mark AR scope.
Use irons while you're saving for the glass. Buy once, cry once.
