I get that reference."Do you know who we are fighting? We are fighting Wolverines: small, ferocious animals." - Col. Strelnikov
Michigan lost yesterday."Do you know who we are fighting? We are fighting Wolverines: small, ferocious animals." - Col. Strelnikov
But then again, neither of those examples are of a country turning on itself. It depends on how determined and willing to take casualties either side is. And also on where the loyalties or at least sympathies of the large part of the population who aren't going to fight lie. Given the current almost 50/50 ratio in the US now, a successful insurgency here doesn't look good.
Afghanistan is kind of a poor example as the US isn't really trying to win. Until the US stepped into the fight the Russians were indeed winning and the Afghan insurgency was on the verge of being wiped out. Joining the mujahedin was seen as a death sentence due to over whelming air superiority, technology and the use of Spetznatz forces to go after the Mujh where they lived. It was the introduction of Stinger missiles by Congressman Wilson that turned things around and allowed them to kick the Soviets out.
Which ironically had we simply lived up to our promises to the Afghans at that point we wouldn't have the mess there we do now nor would 9/11 probably ever have happened.
Ignoring the Soviets near win, the only successful counter-insurgency war in modern times was the British in Malaysia. But even with that the Brit's ultimately pulled out and granted independence.
That was part of my point.Lot of truth in that article.
Also, how many of our armed forces would fire on the "bubbas" if ordered to do so by some leftist president?
Actually they were, in both cases the communists had either come to power or were trying to. Thus dividing the County against itself. But then again, neither of those examples are of a country turning on itself.
I think you underestimate. First of all, you have no idea how it would be here, in the United States, if that were to happen. Second, I don't think it would be a small percentage of the armed services that would defect, and if they did they wouldn't just drop their arms and run.Actually they were, in both cases the communists had either come to power or were trying to. Thus dividing the County against itself.
The points are still relevant to the US as absent some serious defection of the Military (as in CW1) the insurgency would be up against the full might of a pissed off government trying to retain power.
Just as while people like to gloss over it, us Americans couldn't beat the British during the Revolution until the French joined in. We were mildly successful against the minimal forces the Brits were willing to commit (along with their ridiculous over confidence) to what they considered a minor event, while they were much more heavily engaged in two other (to their eyes) real wars.
Reading comprehension...it helps. That is pretty much what I just stated.I think you underestimate. First of all, you have no idea how it would be here, in the United States, if that were to happen. Second, I don't think it would be a small percentage of the armed services that would defect, and if they did they wouldn't just drop their arms and run.
