    The fact is it is pretty hard to screw up BBQ. Lockhart has the better resturants but the best BBQ on earth is in my back yard, same goes for steaks, and anything else done on hardwood fire. Second best is my nextdoor neighbor.{although if you ask him I will be second}

Thelma's BBQ near downtown Houston... It's an old beat up shack with no A/C and you have to wait 1hr for your food because of the line, but it's worth the wait. If you don't want to wait, Thelma will come out herself and tell your azz to get steppin'. :D

If it aint mine then it's Ms Thelma's. By far best BBQ I have ever bought. In Dallas Sonny Bryan's (on Inwood Rd) is very good.
In Fort Worth Angelo's BBQ is good as well.
Spainish Flower in the heights in Houston is the best Mexican food I have ever had. In Dallas best Mexican food is either Primo's Bar and Grill or Matt's El Rancho. There is a Matt's in Austin as well. Man I am hungey now.

    I'd say...

Hao-Hao is my favorite Chinese / Vietnamese. They are on William Cannon and Manchaca Rd. in Austin.

Kreutz is by FAR my favorite BBQ place for the sausage alone. I also get a little bit of the cheese too usually. As far as brisket, my uncle Doug and Grandfather cook the best I've ever had.

For Mexican, I'd say El Gallo in Austin on Congress is probably the best all around. For enchiladas you can't beat Nuevo Leon; they also make some strong drinks.

Burgers goes to Dan's hands down. I have never eaten a burger that was better than Dan's. It's the kind of place that needs a defibulator on the wall.

Since we're crossing over to other foods, Vietname/Chinese would be Mai's Restaurant for me. It's in Downtown Houston also and open 364 days out of the year until 2-3am. Only closes for Christmas.

Gonzales Meat Market... Gonzales Texas. Went there today on my way to the Shiner Brewery in Shiner. Best sausage ever. Been there since 1959. Highly recommended.

I'll second Alan on Hao Hao and Dan's in Austin. Unbeatable.

I noticed a couple people have mentioned Lockhart but I think the best Pit BBQ in Lockhart is actually in Luling about 20 miles south the Luling City Market has some of the best Texas style ribs around and their Brisket beats Krutez Market hands down...but that is just my two cents... everyone has their favorite BBQ place and for the most part they are all different. The only thing that is not that great is the sausage in that area it all seems to have too much fat in it that cooks out and you are left with a casing with loose meat in it, the seasoning is great but the texture is just strange... the smokehouse BBQ places around Elgin and Taylor are on the right track for sausage in my mind, I would have to go with the Southside Market as the best...and now if you can't make the trip out there you can at least get close because they sell their sausage at HEB... For the best Cowboy BBQ I would have to go with Cooper's out in Llano their steaks and chops are pretty darn good.

-if anyone else here is on myspace I run a BBQ page on there at www.myspace.com/protexana it is a work in progress only five reviews written up so far but I have been to a bunch more places because at one point I was thinking of writing a travel book about Texas BBQ

I haven't eaten sausage from there in years. It's too greasy for me.:( I like the BBQ sauce they sell and the brisket is good.

One of the best steaks I have had in my life was at the DunBar East Motel in San Angelo. Just a little hole in the wall motel at 1728 Pulliam St., but Daaaaamn that steak rocks!

    Don't tell everyone.....it's suppose to be a secret....BTW, JR's BBQ ain't too shabby either.

I have to chime in about a little place in Brownwood. Smittys, they do it all including goat and peach cobbler for dessert. Very nice people and good BBQ,ribs, brisket and chicken. I am still trying to figure out what thwy use in the pot salad, the lady would not tell me everything, she said I had most of it figured out but not the rest. I guess I will have to keep trying. They cook on real pits with real wood, Becoming a lost art.:patriot:

Rudy's on #10 west of San Antonio is the best Texas BBQ I've had. I'd rate it just ahead of Coopers in LLano. Think Rudy's has 3 or 4 locations now; one near Sea World in San Antone, another in College Station, and maybe one more somewhere.

For steak I really like "A Taste of Texas" just off the Sam Houston toll road and highway 10 W in Houston. Although, I'd as soon have a ribeye off my own grill!!

Rudy's has more then 3 or 4 locations, I can think of 3 in Austin off the top of my head.

I've heard of Dans for burgers, but have never been there. I love Burger Tex on Guadalupe.

As for bbq, when me and my friends stay up all night cooking a brisket and combine all of our talents. It's the best.

If I'm gonna buy it here in Wichita its gotta be Richards BBQ very very good. Now if I'm gonna cook have to drive to Muenster and get some of their german sausage. There is also a good place on Hwy.6 in between Hico and Waco not sure of the name of the town or place but very good, if I remember right Ted Nuggent took Tony Bourdain there on No Reservations.
