Saw a guy carrying a IWB Glock today in a elementary school parking lot.

Yeah... that law means I can have the benefit of CC but OC if I want to in order to let creeps like the one I encountered yesterday know that they can pass on by me as I’m taking a stroll if they want to find a softer target to intimidate.

(I WAS on the sidewalk in front of the school at the moment that this (lechery) happened to me).

The laws I read didn't state a difference between OC and CC. It just discussed where you can carry. Maybe there are other laws which discuss any legal differences but I didn't search for them.

I think this is one situation where CC would be OK but OC or accidentally exposing your concealed weapon would be a problem. I again think there are a lot of skittish people would would freak out if they saw a gun anywhere on school property. In this case I didn't see the guy's gun until he was walking away from the school. I wonder if I would have reacted differently if I'd saw his weapon as he was walking toward the school?
That's because we have a license to carry, OC or CC is at user discretion.

Sounds like it’s the perfect next crusade for OC Texas to take up! Let’s see how far they (or anyone, for that matter) gets in opening carrying right up, next to a high school building. Any takers? It’s legal....you’re not breaking any laws...
Why not? OCT has a penchant for getting serious discussion started amongst gun owners. OCT and Texas Carry got the OC ball rolling while TSRA sat on its thumbs. Sometimes crazy works.....

To me, this is one of those situations where just because you “legally” can, doesn’t necessarily make it the “smart” thing to do - especially in this day and age.

Perhaps we can eventually get the school zone laws changed but until then common sense needs to prevail.

The gun free zone thing seems to have long since out lived it’s usefulness. Why were they created to begin with? As I recall, mainly to prevent kids bringing guns to school (zero tolerance policies). Well, we’ve now got laws that make it illegal for unsupervised minors to possess guns outside the home and even hold their parents responsible if those guns are not locked up to prevent the underaged kids gaining access. The GFSZs just make the schools a ‘soft target’ for those who aren’t going to follow the law anyway.

I guess i kinda stirred up a hornets nest... my bad. wasnt my intention. i just had seen someone say it was illegal to carry your gun in a school parking lot which wasn't true so I was just helping to spread some clarity on the subject. and as for OC vs CC i have no idea someone on th eother forum had mentioned not OCing. i imagine its legal as well but as many mentioned it probably isnt a good idea. either way if the school wants to make a scene out of it, they can and then you could sue the school district for unlawful detainment when you weren't breaking any laws.

I don’t care what the culture says.

People need to learn to snap that the odds are if you are at a public park or picking up your kid from school or using the sidewalk in front of a school and you happen to have a holstered pistol, that odds are you are there most likely with your kids that you want to protect, and are not there to shoot up the school.

That’s how I feel and what I think, and I am happy to just see how that works out for me.

I’m sorry. I’ll reign it in next time. I just couldn’t help myself after you bragged about the way you handle a pair of testicles.

Once or twice I've picked my kids up from school in my truck, and have had to get out, Full on OWB, to lift my daughter up. Both times I felt like a douche nozzle, but I knew it was fine since I wasn't entering the 30.06/30.07 posted building.

Side note: The school also has armed security. But it's such a shitty school we are re-enrolling them into traditional public school this fall.

It’s not a matter of being fearful. It’s a matter of me not trying to “fix stupid”.

It sounds like your assumption is, he simply doesn’t know any better. My assumption is, he has a cc license, so has been trained to know better. And since he’s made a conscious decision to violate the law, he’s on his own as far as I’m concerned. What part of a “Gun Free Zone” sign (not to mention, state statutes) does he not understand? I expect adults to take responsibility for their own actions - most especially when they’ve been trained to know the law that applies to carrying - and have elected to ignore it.

None of us are "experts" (extremely rare -- I've only met ONE in my life) so ANY of us can flash our CC guns inadvertently, or even have negligent discharges. I'd still tell the guy, but others can choose not to (as most will, for the reasons I give).

Why tell someone about something that didn’t matter?

I might not know about a particular state's carry laws if I were an unarmed/armed visitor (I travel to a number of states), so I'd prefer to err on the side of caution, that's all.
If it "doesn't matter" then no harm done in speaking to the person, but if it DID matter an "unfortunate incident" prevented for the carrier in question.
I didn't want to argue the point, so I'm done now. Sorry for my intrusion...

born and raised in Texas, and I've always liked the "southern hospitality" as northerners put it... If I was clearly CCing and MEANT to be CCing and my gun accidentally was exposed I would appreciate if someone (probably another LTC holder) came up to me and politely said something like "hey man whenever you reached up on the top shelf for that jar of pickled okra, your gun was exposed. You might already be aware of it, but I just thought I'd let you know in case you weren't." Personally I don't like for my gun to be exposed. Nobody needs to know that I have a gun imo. It's my business. no one else. so for someone to come up to me and let me know, I'd appreciate it and be a bit more conscientious about reaching so high for that jar of okra.

But like you said, "it's your business".

There's nothing wrong with it happening, why would anybody think twice about it.
