    If you're adept at using chopsticks perhaps it's kinda cool to do so especially if it's more efficient, though I don't see how?

    If you can't dip those chop sticks I don't know what to tell ya...yeah, just slurp off the drippy ends, there you go. I'll be back in 4 hours for your next course.

    I used to be pretty good at 'walking the dog' and other tricks with my Duncan Yo-Yo.

    Enjoyed the admiring looks I did.
    Believe it or not, they use knives in Japan.

    I'm trying my best to be so.....

    I thought knives in Japan were only for performing Seppuku.

    I'm wrong?
    On my first trip to Japan, a couple of coworkers asked if I would like to go with them later to eat blowfish. I agreed, but later found out that many people had died from eating blowfish. I still went, but decided on the Kobe beef instead. Now this place was a traditional style, where you knelt on tatami mats and ate off a very short table. Although I ate my beef with chopsticks, I did have to cut it to bite size.

    I did try a small piece of the blowfish and I don't remember the taste much, but I do remember the tingly sensation in my mouth and throat.

    BTW, although the Kobe beef was fairly expensive, it was about half of what they paid for that blowfish.

    A good sharp knife beats a fork anytime.
    (My steak knives are actually German-made kitchen knives & sharpen well.)

    YES, I habitually use chopsticks. = I think NOODLES, especially in soup, are hard to eat with a fork. - Your mileage may vary.

    Certainly different cultures do things differently, but as I said, chopsticks can be more efficient than silverware for certain foods. I can care less what someone might think of me while I'm eating. Now if I didn't know how to use them, then most certainly I would look like a fool.

    SPOT ON. - LOTS of ex-GIs of the RVN era use chopsticks AND eat a LOT of Asian food when compared to "ordinary Americans".
    (At our house, given that my lady is Sicilian, you are MUCH more likely to get "exotic" food than meat & potatoes.)

    Just a point of order.

    In traditional, formal Chinese eating, using a knife to cut meat at the table is considered uncivilized. Any host who required their guests to do so would be asking them to perform "butchery at the table." That's a huge social faux pas, at minimum. More likely, it would be considered an insult.

    In a commercial, traditional Chinese kitchen, there is a person known, in Chinese, as "the knife." His job is to cut up everything so that it's exactly the right and consistent size for cooking and eating. The knife is arguably as revered as the head chef since it is the skills of the knife that make it possible for everyone else to do their job.

    At a traditional Chinese meal, you'd never be served a steak. If you're served beef, it will already be in pieces that are exactly the right size to pick up with chopsticks.

    This tradition has eroded over the last few decades as it collides with Western ways but the principle remains. I know that when I cook Chinese food, it turns out much better when I pay serious attention at the beginning to exactly how I cut everything in preparation for the wok.

    "It takes guts to make tripe." - Fixed that for ya. I have eaten tripe also. And just a thought about chopsticks. Chopsticks are fine for a very large, poor civilization like in China or India. Do they use chopsticks in India ? I suppose when chopsticks were invented, it was a big improvement over eating with your fingers, especially something like rice with some kind of sauce and veggies in it. I suppose that in Europe, people were still eating with their fingers until most could afford forks, spoons, and knives. But NOW the Chinese would be more advanced if they switched to eating with knives and forks. Eating with chopsticks is like hunting game with a club and dragging them back to your cave. Its sort of uncivilized. Not to mention that the Chinese eat monkeys, dogs, and cats- not much they won't eat, and like.

    I don't know, I just followed along. It was more pleasant than contemplating bloody skirmishes and slit throats, I guess.
