I am a native but I have lived in a few other states. Alot of good people have moved here but I think that it is harder for people that arent from the south / west or atleast a rural area to assimilate into the traditional Texan culture that I grew up in and still live everyday.

The big takeaway is if you come here, assimilate and dont expect us to cater to you or your way of doing things because I am not changing for anyone
Funny thing about that - I moved here just about half my life ago, and all it took was a brief visit to really know that I never assimilated into the state culture where I was born. I feel I was born Texan, just in another state. The food, the people, the way of life (outside of the cities, that is), the culture all fit me - so here I am.

Fun fact - I was born WELL north of the Mason Dixon.

I don’t know if it’s actually true, but the joke for Marine aviators going from Corpus Christi to San Diego is that half way point is El Paso. Think about it. You are going from Texas to California, half way across the country. Halfway into your journey, you’re still in Texas.

Again, never done the math but that’s the joke Marine pilots tell each other. True or not it keeps the legend alive about the size of Texas.
That is no joke. I drove LA to Houston. My mid way point was El Paso.

Yea dont get me wrong. My wife is from NJ and until the south has a ready supply of hot italian women, I guess I am shit out of luck on finding a southern one. I dont hate northerners from the country because in alot of ways, they are just like us. I lived up there for a few years and met all kinds of good people and a ton of my buddies from the USMC are yankees. Its just the city people really. They think life should be lived at x10000 speed and that everyone is a giant inconvenience to wherever they are going at that very moment. Does anyone want to live near people like that? I sure as shit dont want to.

The key issue is assimilation. You should absorb the culture and you leave wherever you came from at the door. Sounds like you are doing this and have been for a long ass time so as the aussies say "GOOD ONYA MATE"

The reason Pelosi and Hilary started all the California fires was to get those people to move to Texas....

You get outside the cities in most states and you'll find that there is a lot of people that have a lot in common. Most people I lived around in Belfair, Wa. was very conservative and it was only about 35 miles from Seattle, as the crow flies. The problem was, the leftist ideal is like a cancer and was slowly creeping it's way into our way of life.

    mad88minute,

ImVho, you have every right to call yourself TEXAN, as all of us, including native-born Texicans like me, are either emigrants or descendants of emigrants.

Well I wasn’t born here, I was born at Ft Carson, Colorado because my Dad was drafted into the Army. Both my parents were from Texas and returned about 6 months after I was born. Spent all my life before the military in Texas, and about 12 years of my Active Duty career, and the 10 years since I retired. So I guess I’m just about as Texan as you can get. But I’m still not sure I can call myself a Native Texan.

I have often heard that if you cut Alaska in half, Texas would be the third largest state.

My answer is that when I buy a drink, I don't pay for the ice....

    To All,

NOBODY is more flamboyantly "TEX-ANNE" than my adopted daughter, who was born in Acapulco, lived in Mexico until she was a teenager & came to us originally as a "foreign exchange student" in 1977.

Now, she is a PROUD naturalized American citizen, an electrical engineer with a MSEE, a former UT-Austin faculty member, a Texas DPS "big shot" & as FANATIC an Orangeblood as I've ever met in my 73 years.

    yours, satx

The Southern/rural part is absolutely true. Being from the Carolinas originally, with a very proud and well documented family history there, the lore of Texas and the freedom associated with is not hard to understand. Even from days of old, that’s what brought many Southerners to Texas. The independent spirit of Texas has always drawn those types of individuals here. I’m eternally thankful for my family’s roots in SC, but Texas will always be the place that feels like home.

I use to live in Blacksburg SC
