The only rule that won't be easily gamed is if we made it a requirement to attend a local lunch meet before being allowed to post in classifieds.

Could also get a little creative with criteria on what type of posts are counted. Like they have to have 25 posts over 25 characters long where 25% of the words are unique to previous posts. That would at least make them be creative while gaming the rules.

Someone please explain to me how a classified ad harms/hinders/coerces/insults/threatens/defrauds or even inconveniences anyone, in any way, whatsoever.
That's a good argument to not even have the rule. People can easily see how long a user has been here and their interaction level, and then act on the classifieds post accordingly.

Big forums with classifieds always get scammers and spammers.

That’s why it’s critical to have some degree of vetting so good folks don’t get burned.

It’s not a knock against anyone personally.

I prefer to vet my interactions for myself. I don't want others' rules imposed on me in terms of deciding with whom I can conduct business.

Now days the safest way to buy sell and trade is amongst a group like this where people develop relationships reputations and arent just here to sell.

It greatly reduces the chance of bad stuff happening. Like getting scammed or buying stolen guns etc. I'm not saying it cant happen because I've seen it. It's just very rare, and people dont just flip and disappear only to pop back in later.

On the other hand you dont ban people for following the rules. They will phuck themselves in short order and burn the bridge when that bad rep gets out. It's really good to have info and feed back unlike other places. It's better to know this stuff than not.

Y'know, I was kidding with Cam but I wonder if that might work. Just brainstorming but what if before posting an ad, you had to have met with a current member? Lunch or a range trip would work fine.

That's not a high bar, is it? I mean, CodyK is pretty new but I've been shooting with him and I think he passes muster to buy or sell.

But now that I think about it, any really bad actor would create sock puppet accounts and create a real nightmare for the mods and the image of the board.

So I still encourage members to get together for any reason but as for making it a rule...

Split the classifieds...those paying to be a supporter to sell get put in a sub-forum similar to the Vendor stuff. Don’t mention the personal classifieds in the rules.

For member-to-member transactions, hide them in a private sub-forum requiring 25 posts before someone can see it/ request to join it.

Whatever the solution, it really depends on what the purpose for having the classifieds to begin with.

Answer that and work backwards to site policy.

This is an issue on any forum with a classified section. Most have minimum post counts.

I suggest the following which works well in a couple other forums I frequent. Or some variation of the following.

Have the minimum post count number be kept secret. Then when someone hits it the forum notifies a mod who is required to give them access only after making sure they arent just a glorified spammer. If they do the one word post BS the mod ups the number notifies them thru PM nice try no cigar and to contribute.

Another board does basically the same except they require the member request access first after a certain time on the board/forum.

It really isnt different then activating new accounts on some forums and I dont think the number of new folks would overwhelm the staff here unless I'm missing something.

    Just a thought.

On our local forum we have a B/S/T area for supporting members only. Folks will either just list their items here or they will list them in the general population area and also in the supporting members area, usually with a discount for supporting members. If you are not a supporting member, you are unable to see this area.
