As title says or don't be stupid.. Any who a big group of us were at a ranch for my birthday. We did a skeet shoot and things went great. We had a few buddies out in deer blinds on the back of the property. They asked if they could get a pickup at dark instead of walking back. Well when night came I was peeling shrimp for a fish fry and I asked my buddy to take my ranch truck (1982 toyota Hilux) out to go get the guys. Well I had a double gun case with my Browning Citori 20g and my Winchester 101 12g in the back. Now a big part of this story is it wouldn't have happened if my friend wasn't F'ing around but he was. So he went to pickup my buds and decided to hot rod my truck on the way up there.. The case flew out of back of the pick up on a bump and then on the way back to the ranch house he ran over it with the truck as it was at the bottom of the hill and he couldn't see it in time.

So basically $3000 worth of shot guns smashed up. The toyota hilux is a rather light truck and it has big 12.50 mud tires on it. He also ran over the case right where the two steel receivers were. So I took the guns to mcbrides and they said I dodged a bullet as they are not ruined and still function fine... However The wood on both guns is very gouged and ruffed up. Both guns had absolutely beautiful wood and both guns were 20-30 years old also and although had heavy hunting use were in great condition.

So long story short.. Close your tail gate, take your guns out of the truck, or do things yourself if do want results like these. there is nothing I can really do so it is water under the bridge now but the fact my friend was treating my Hilux like a go-cart was pretty frustrating.. However it is a big go-cart.. Just stupidity that almost had a multiple thousand $ price tag. Secure your loads always!

This should probably be in rants and raves..

Well not many gun cases out there that will not be harmed by a truck running over the top. I agree though. Its just one of those things.. You don't expect it to happen.

As far as my friend goes he offered to pay w/e however it would cost $800 per gun for new wood... The wood looks like shit but I would not call it ruined.. I can't justify making him pay $1600 for an pseudo accident.

This made me sick though and just about ruined my trip. These 2 guns are very special to me and another example of if you have things that cannot be replaced be way more careful with them. I am young and dumb and still learning these things I presume...

If it was a case full of ar-15s I honestly wouldn't give a shit.. That is just me though.

you be amazed at how strong a few brands are out there. ive got Pelican cases for all my long guns. I actually think they could probably handle a truck rolling over them. but seriously good luck with restoring those special shottys of yours!! TS

It sounds like your friend had no respect for you, truck and guns. There is a code of honor in which you fix or pay for what you break.

He definitely did not... I have known him a long time and he has always been very respectful but he sure screwed the pooch on this one. Something I left out is that he had a girl with him in the truck.. I think a little showing off was underway... Not acceptable for a 25 year old though.

I guess my point with this thread is that even though it seems obvious it is not so easy in the moment to take a few extra seconds and be diligent to Account for your gear. Slow down.. This is generally good info but with anything guns it is obviously 100x more important. After he was already gone it hit me that the tailgate was down but at that point all I could do was hope.

Some people reading this might not understand as a lot of people that shoot guns take their guns out.. go to the range and then bring them home and put them up.. That is not the type of gun use I prefer or do very often. It is fortunate yet unfortunate that Texas is so private as it makes it real hard for a lot of gun owners to get out there and do anything except punch paper at the range.

If he is a true friend, he will own up to his mistake and fix your shotguns. That is just disrespect for you and your personal property. Seems he was letting the little one do the thinking. He knows what they meant to you. If you are able to let it go, you're definitely a better man than I am. I'd be fit to be tied.

You might have shown poor judgment in leaving your shotguns in a case in the back of your truck with the tailgate open but your friend in an IDIOT for hot rodding around in someone elses vehicle. Apparently his folks did not raise to respect other people's property.

I guess it was a good thing he did not wreck your truck and you had to walk to work.

One possible alternative would be to find some take-off wood from another shottie. Tell him it's up to him - you don't care how, but the stocks need to be replaced with comparable wood. It's actually gonna be good for him, too - because it's going to reinforce the need to be respectful for others' property.

    This post nails it.
Bet "friend" did not even offer to make it right either.
I can count the "friends" I had at 25 who are still around on about two fingers. The more you mature, ( read age) the less tolerance you will have for people (jerks) like this.
