    How about 10mm.

I think cmmg has the barrel and BCG parts in kits or separately. Its not straight blowback. It uses a traditional BCG in a method they call radial delayed blowback which means the thing has to unlock to cycle.

Imagine full power 10mm from a 10 inch barrel. You could hunt anything on the continent with that. Especially since cape buffalo have been taken from a 5 inch 1911 in 10mm.

You could probably shoot higher pressure rounds than a 10mm pistol could handle if you're into that or just stick to the hottest stuff commercially available. Point being the hotter stuff would probably be more reliable in a rifle than the 40s&w like light stuff because of the huge variations in power and the operating system.

That's if carrying the same ammo in rifle and pistol matter.

I did a 300 Blk and like it a ton. A couple of my kids have taken their first deer with it. I use FDE mags and furniture on the 300 Blk so I don't confuse the ammo.

The comment "depends how it headspaces" was a general comment referring to the fact that different bullet types head space on different parts of the round/chamber interface that stops the bullet from moving any farther forward in the chamber.

Specifically, the 556 round is rimless and headspaces at the base of the neck where the case flares out. Head space issues can cause problems from the bolt not closing to primer issues and case ruptures causing kabooms.

Addressing an issue can be as simple as using a different bolt so it will close fully or if its very close, working the action until it wears to the point that it closes.

Other issues can be solved by properly torquing the barrel or get more involved by requiring actually milling the face of the barrel slightly and re assembling then re reaming the chamber and reassembling.

These issues are extremely rare since the AR is so sorted out and barrel manufacturers use cnc machines to achieve repeatable tightly accurate tolerances.

Also you will have great difficulty trying to cut into chrome lined barrels.

Bottom line is the best or easiest way is to return the barrel if you actually have one with headspace issues not fixable on the bolt side of the equation.

    Im a 6.5 grendel fan.
More ass & flatter shooting than 5.56 or 7.62x39. It gets you close to 308 ballistics without the weight of an AR10 platform.

Ive been looking at the 350 legend or a .458 socom thumper for my next project.
