In Corpus Christi, where I grew up, the stores had two water coolers bolted to the wall. One had a white handle - that's the one "we" used. The other one had a dark brown/black handle that's the one "they" used. Had nothing to do with "culture". Different counters/space for "them" at the drug store/ soda shop. There's other things I saw as a kid. Racism was a real thing then. Not so much now. A lot of folks confuse bigot with racist - there quite a bit of difference between the two words.

My mom told me of an incident that happened to her when she a young girl in the late 1940s.
She lived in Arlington TX. and my grand parents took her to Fort Worth for a shopping trip.

She had the misfortune to drink from a water fountain the was marked COLORED and she did not realize it or did not read the sign.
An older Black Man ran over and gave her a scolding for daring to drink from the wrong fountain.

She said she was terrified and apologized, ran away.

I guess when you are oppressed, you can at least use the oppression to your advantage to discourage 'whitey' in a reciprocal tactic? (if I can't drink from yours,DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT MINE!)

No argument about “then”! My comment was more about now.

A BBQ joint in Elgin had black entry & white entry doors well into the 80s. The doors weren't labeled, but everyone just knew which door to use.
    ETA; Elgin instead of Manor

I know a lawyer in Brownwood that has maps and architectural plans from the city displayed in his offices. One of the plans (circa 1910) is the train station which showed the "colored" waiting room and restrooms.

It looks like we've seen the end of debates already. POTUS says he's not going to participate in a "virtual" debate. Of course, if you want a team around you and access to a teleprompter, virtual is the way to go.

The networks cowed down and said they will just postpone it 1 week over going virtual.

They could not pass up all the people Trump Brings to the station.
