Im in the market for an AR-10 and would like some input on what I should look for to get the best bang for my buck? Price range maxes out at about 1500. (Just the Rifle right now, optics will come later) Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated.

Alright thanks for the info, is it true that a 20 inch barrel is the same as a 22 or 24 in barrel? I have talked to a few gun shops and that is what they are saying but I would think that a 22 or 24 would give more stability than a 20?

yeah i'd like a 20", even if it gave up a little in extra long range accuracy.
makes for a more compact pkg for urban social duty, getting in/out of cars, and such.

all the powder is burned up in the first 12 inches about.
.308 s don't benefit from longer barrels unless you use extremely slow burning powders and heavy bullets
if you do that probably you needed a .300 win mag anyhow.
in a .22 lr all the powder is burned in about 10.5 inches.
keeping pressure on the bullet for another.00018 of a second likely won't help much.

so what your saying is that if I'm trying to shoot a pumpkin out at 800 yards I would be able to with a 308 w/ a 20 in I just need slower burner powder with a heavier bullet?

If you can do your part, you can do it with an 18, 20, or 24 inch barrel with the same bullets you shoot at lesser distances. Now......I'm sure I can't hit anything at 800 yds., I can't even see that far!

Thanks Charlie, I just wanted to make sure because I have a few 30.06 rifles my favorite the Rem. 700 tac and i shoot out to about 800 yds with it with ease, not saying i always hit but pretty close. But I just wanted to make sure I could reach that far with a .308

I heard RRA is better than DPMS but cost a bit more. I am also planning on buying a semi-auto .308 and AR-10/LAR-8 is on the running along with FAL once I saved enough pennies. :D

Barrel length depends on what you plan on using it for. For me, long range shooting is better left to the bolt action rifle and the semi-auto is for closer encounters...to that effect, I am leaning towards 16" or 18" barrel but that is just me. :)

Ever heard of "professional" sniper using a semi? There must be a good reason for it but I am no expert.

My understanding is that with a bolt action, you concentrate all the ammo force towards its own bullet. On semi, some of it is used to eject the casing and to re-load as it cycles. Another advantage of the semi in this aspect is that the cycling action also dampens the recoil plus possible addition of other mechanical recoil dampeners. Not so with bolt other than a good shoulder pad.

Someone please correct me if I am mistaken. I won't be offended a bit.
