I have always said that if Lincoln had been a truly great president, he would have found a way to resolve the issue without egging on a war.

Armchair quarterbacking the civil war?
Even with the benefit of hindsight being 20/20, I'm not sure the parties involved could have been brought together without violence. Possibly could have split the country and let the south atrophy while the north prospered industrially. Really hard to tell how thing would've shaken out.

So. How would you have done it diferently and gotten a different result? Are we better off together? Or would navigating the 150 yrs after the civil war have been better accomplished separately? With as good a set of results?
