    Armchair quarterbacking the civil war?
    Even with the benefit of hindsight being 20/20, I'm not sure the parties involved could have been brought together without violence. Possibly could have split the country and let the south atrophy while the north prospered industrially. Really hard to tell how thing would've shaken out.

    The key to defusing the civil war was understanding just what a slave was to both sides. To an abolitionist, the slave is a human being, to the slave owner the slave is a piece of farm machinery. The top military guy General Scott understood early on that a civil war would be long,bloody, destructive, expensive and logistically driven. For what was going to be spent by Americans on both sides in blood and treasure you could have freed the slaves, compensated the owners and spent money promoting manufacturing in the south. No need to ship that cotton to England if you can make clothes out of it here.
