    The original post asked:

"How many of those of us that endured the original Texas CHL requirements for firearms use education feel that it was excessive."

This is difficult to answer honestly because 1) the idea of being required to get a license from the government to exercise a natural right is reprehensible, but 2) I believe taking the class was valuable for me, because the details of when and why one may use force or lethal force, were explicated clearly. That was valuable and useful, and it was before one could simply download the .pdf (used to be CHL 16, now LTC 16) from DPS.

And I'm not sure that, even given the pamphlet, I would have the patience to read it and understand what it said.

On the third hand, with the passage of no-license-needed-carry, we have not seen an increase in the number of unlawful shootings by non-felons carrying legally according to that law. Note this excludes the vast majority of the shootings in the news lately, which have been carried out by felons-in-possession or other crooks.

So I doubt taking the class / getting the license decreased the number of illegal shootings, but I found it useful. And I will probably renew when mine comes due, "just because" - not that anyone asked.

I am fully for constitutional carry. However I feel that not having the same knowledge as someone that has not participated in the 10 hour course is not as well prepared.

    What say you?
I tend to think that the training is warranted, reasonable, and prudent. However, having held separately acquired licenses in 5 states, I think there should be some credit given for previous experience. I also strongly disagree with open carry unless in a hunting environment. Showing off your weapon just invites stupidity.

Here in Florida the training requirement is waived if you are a veteran of the military or the police. That made is very convenient when I applied 15 years ago and for that I am thankful. So what kind of training on firearms did I ever get in 26 years of naval service? Nothing in bootcamp because the range was down. Nothing on my first ship before they issued me a 1911 when I stood Quarterdeck watch after I made E-4 at age 18. First real official "training" was from the range master at NAS Pensacola when a group of us went over to qualify for the Navy Expert Pistol medal when I had 24 years in. They issued us a loosey-goosey Ruger Service-Six .38 Special revolver and showed us where to point it. In the interim while on a variety of ships training consisted of mostly fam-fire done about once a year. The target was the ocean. You fired from the fantail and if you got a hit you qualified. I got better training with the ship's main batteries and missiles. But I am certain that the training has improved since 911. And I am pretty sure those who served in the Marines and Army got better firearms training.

Did my military training make a good substitute for a paid-for CHL class? Not really, but then in the Navy it was always "Safety, Safety, Safety!", so that was good.

When I read the 2A I am mindful of "well regulated" and "shall not be infringed". Should training be mandatory? I am no Constitutional scholar but I think some good training would be beneficial.

I was a CHL holder and carried until Obama and his henchman Attorney General screwed me by putting me on the NICS LIST. Because I had a VA fiduciary and my chl was not allowed to be renewed. I went to the VA and they put the paperwork to get me off the NICS. Therefore, whenever we can carry as freemen we should all stand together. The second Amendment is OUR Constitutional carry permit. If someone is not knowledgeable, nor disregards training, or is a criminal. They will sooner or later be brought before the law TO answer and for justice. We should not be divided!

The LTC 2-day course is not excessive whatsoever.
I don’t disagree with CC, but it must be accompanied by a person who is safety conscious, responsible, cautious, wiling and able to learn the laws.
While I am torn (a little anyway) between the right to carry per the 2d Amendment and irresponsible, untrained, or just stupid people with guns on the streets, I do not worry - for the most part - because it is a self-correcting problem. If they carry in the wrong place, use it in the wrong situation, or have an unintended discharges, they will pay the price for their mistake.

And, since 99% of the time responsible gun owners will be blamed anyway no matter who uses the gun, I am glad they made it easier for citizens to carry their firearms.

I believe even us patriots are deferìng our responsibility to train our friends and family to the govt. what the govt gives you, govt can take away. Lets “police” ourselves and demand those around us be responsible.

Most arguments begin with something being said. Why shouldn't speech be licensed?
It will be and partially is right now! If the left gets their way, it will be. Look, they are already declaring misinformation as a terrorist act against the government!

Is it just me or have shootings gone up in Harris County? I know you can't control the bad guys from getting guns but it's getting ridiculous. A child shot in the head from a road rage incident.

They have. But it seems more related to the county officials and activist judges implementing a catch and release program for violent criminals.

This has been one of the better discussions at least me. Some thoughtful and considerate comments. Keep it going.
BTW: While I wasn't first to get a CHL in my neighborhood I got it soonest; my # is 3XXX. Does anyone have or seen a lower number? While buying a gun years ago the salesman said he had seen a license nr. much lower.

I waited the first 4 to see how things progressed. The first school was 2 days taught by a retired DPS officer who also was a retired Marine. I learned a lot and don't regret having to take the class. I do believe in CC, though what we have here is more like permit less carry. CC carry to me would not have places one could not carry. I also believe that if one chooses to carry one should get the best training one can afford. But that is only my 2 cents which at today's rates doesn't go very far.

Does anyone know if keeping your CCL current, even with constitutional carry now available, will still allow you to purchase a new firearm without enduring the waiting period?

I haven't heard anything to the contrary.

And by "waiting period", you mean the phone call, right?

    these were online....not by telephone....
