Now seven pharmaceutical companies are reporting shortages of a common treatment for ADHD and narcolepsy. The shortage affects roughly 2.5 million Americans with ADHD.

I’m just wondering if all of the unnatural crap they are putting in processed foods is causing this. To you Boomers out there, was this ever an issue when you were growing up? While I'm definitely not a boomer, I'm pretty sure limited attention spans and hyperactivity in children has always been a thing. It's just that they used to be prescribed a little "shut the hell up and sit down before I beat your ass," instead of some chemicals in pill form.

I don't remember any drugs like this in 50s- 60s. Behavior was corrected, not medicated.

Yes but probably about only about 2% of what is claimed today. The majority is more like misguided parents and parents who just don't know how to raise kids. I've seen many kids weened off their meds and then normal lives.

I'm a boomer & sure it was around while I was growing up. In elementary school it was getting to move my desk into to cloak room so I didn't look out the window. It was getting sent to the principle for doodling during classes. It was get smacked up side my head for not paying attention at home. I was not getting to do anything until my homework was done, it also was not turning anything in.

That changed as I got older, to never carrying a notebook or penciln because I seen other got away with it. It was also other then my gym locker never even knowing were my hall locker was all thru High School.

Sad thing is I graduated in the top 25%, got kicked out very early my senior year & graduating with a full diploma going to night school half way thru the senior year.

In the 50’s and 60’s (when I was a kid) I got my ass beat by both the teachers and my parents. No ADD bullshit. It’s no wonder the kids are so phuked up. Just go to Walmart and watch the parent not do shit when their kids are being aassholes. My Dad or Mom would have knocked my happy ass in the head if I ever acted like that. The problem is the liberal bleeding hearts listening to these pervy homotranny experts telling people how to raise their kids. Parents need to grow some balls if they want to raise real men. These kids are being groomed to believe that being a pervert makes you special. Most ADD is bullshit.

I did not hear the diagnosis for hyper-activity as ADD until the late 70s. Which was about the time Obetrol was pulled and reformulated. Obetrol was a weight loss drug, mostly amphetamine salts and it had some nasty side effects.
A couple of minor changes to Obetrol, add dextroamphetamine salts, and market it as ADDeral, a drug for ADD, Attention Deficit Disorder. They added the H, ( Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) about 10 years later, to make it more encompassing of the general disorder, adding a few million more prescriptions.

When I was a kid if you were hyper-active, or had any type of attention issue, you got clobbered upside the head. That worked quite well. There was no prescription needed and no, well not many, side effects.

I’ve seen the modern parenting in action. Kids out of control, tantrums, screaming, running around senseless. I think you are right, this is a parenting issue. As such, those parents need a good arse whooping. As for the kids, I guess we will soon see see how growing up with with time-outs and participation trophies shaped their lives as adults.

The solution my dad came up with was more studying and even testing me on the subjects that showed my "lack of attention". My spelling scores went from 10 or 15 to 100 - I was zoning out during the tests - and I never had trouble with spelling again!
