    Since the thread is drifting...
    • When I rode, I tended to leave room between me and the car ahead at stoplights just so I could squirt between cars if I saw the one behind me closing a little too fast and , it seemed to me, wasn't seeing me.
    • I never split lanes. I never felt small enough to do it. And my mom, who happily split lanes on a Harley dresser, thought I was a total wimp. :)
    • I stopped riding after a completely unavoidable car accident. That accident taught me that despite the fact that riding a motorcycle gave me better situational awareness and the superior braking and accelerating that could enable me to get out of bad situations, there were some situations that were total no-win scenarios. If I had been on my bike, I would have died. I never rode again.

From what I've observed, it's not just roadways - people behave as if they're the only one on this earth in almost all situations. Pushing the cart down the main aisle at the grocery store, inevitably someone will come right out of a side aisle without even so much as pausing to look. Damn frustrating to those of us with even the slightest amount of situational awareness.
    Don't EVEN get me started.
My favorite: the yahoo that gets halfway down the Aisle then parks diagonally in the middle, so no one can pass either way. They then usually step away from their own cart to pause and do nothing but appear to study Every individual label on the shelf. Maybe they're counting the cans/jars? Calculating their checkbook balance? Singing "Kum Bai Yah" in their head? Mystifying.

While we're at it, I hae people at the drive thru who have to study a menu for several minutes that hasn't changed noticeably in, sometimes, decades.

Nothing has changed since the last 35 thousand times you have been here.

To be fair, sometimes it's the first time. "Ah, hell, I've been driving by for fifteen years...guess I'll finally give Burger King a try..."

30 minutes later... "Well, that was a bad idea."

Edited to add: I personally have not ever eaten at Burger King. Nor do I plan to.

I figure anything that bugs me about driving will eventually devolve into ranting and raving so I'm just going to post this here.

Lately, I've been noticing lots of drivers stopping well shy of the intersection at red lights. That sounds fine but there are two lights near me where people stop so far back they don't trip the induction loops in the pavement, the lights never turn green, and everyone wastes an irritating amount of time.

Has anyone else noticed this trend?

Here's an example of a car stopped ~2 car lengths back from where he could legally sit to wait for the light. I'm seeing this all the time and wondering what's going on.

Exactly how far 8 seconds is.

Nothing I can post will change your opinion. We will just consider it an internet myth this driver has hooked folks up to a machine to show reaction time.

Not all professional drivers can have your super speed legendary reflexes. They could certainly learn a thing or two from you.

But in all seriousness just drive safe.

If reaction time is that slow, how pray tell can anyone catch a ball?

Actually, it appeared to begin in Memphis due to rumors regarding, or when there actually were a few people--in whichever city-- who stopped level with cars which had Thugs, and apparently a shot or two were fired. If true, that could have been between different gangs.

I often have the clear impression that they are afraid that it is --perceived-- by even non-thug drivers as some sort of challenge. Wow. Such pansies.

I don't give a s**t what anybody thinks,. My car is always pulled up even with the first white line, as if it's still 1975 in my Dad's Ford Capri.

German-speakers say "Mir ist scheissegal"..= "(to) Me it's Shit-Equal / or totally indifferent"....

Totally Unrelated sidenote here: I'm also surprised how many people pull their trucks backward into garages.
Are you guys doing this as preparation for throwing a BOB (bug out bag) into the truck:marine:? Simply curious.

If my wife:eek: ever backs her car into the garage, she will have figured out which ammo goes into which gun, and also has acquired a method to put my body into her car's trunk (very weak arms). That would be the only reason to back in. Read about how they built Stonehenge.

But she would have no luck digging a large hole in the woods with a shovel. Again, Very weak arms. It's impossible to see any of her ancestors as wives of Danish Vikings in southeastern England.

I don’t know. I’m sure you’ll be able to tell us though.

Various distractions often give people terrible response times. All I know is the results shocked me.

Anyway, you’re welcome to keep beating it to death for your condescending amusement.

Backup cameras probably have something to do with it. It's much easier to tell how far you are from the wall using the camera since most trucks barely fit in a normal garage.

Also, it's safer to pull forward into traffic when you're leaving than it is to back out.

My truck would never fit in a garage but I'm in the habit of backing into parking spots because I have to. Long bed crew cab trucks swing too wide to pull in forward in a full parking lot. When I lived in town I always backed into my driveway just for the better visibility while getting out. Now that I'm back in the country I still back into my spot.

Backing in isn't a flex like some think, it's much safer and many times necessary. It seems to bother people too, which is just an added bonus.

Try it. You might like it.

I always give them 2 seconds (benefit of the doubt), then I say "Excuse me, could you please move your phucking cart?

While I am NOT a motorcyclist, I try to give them as much room for safety as possible. It's when they are the idiots cutting between cars in stop and go traffic that I want to open my door and brake them. Worse yet are the morons that pass you on the wide side(shoulder) of the single lane on the Eastbound side of the Katy HOV lane, one day those morons are gonna rear end a constable.
A good portion of motorcyclists cut in between vehicles at stop lights where I live. If you try to prevent them by narrowing the gap, they'll kick your vehicle.

Here's another ass-chapper. What's with these dudes in pickup trucks makine the big swingout before turning. Apparently they think that their truck (and probably some other things) are much larger than they are. They will make a quick swing halfway into my lane as they make their turn. These ass clowns also must have flunked geometry. I drove semis for years and jerking to the right before a left turn does nothing for you. Plungerheads.

    Here is a driving hack for y’all ;

A lot of the lights now have light sensors instead of pressure plates to facilitate light changes.

These sensors will often automatically change from red to green if they detect strobe lights ( think light bar on first responder vehicles)

If you are driving up to a traffic light with a strobe sensor, quickly flash your high beams several times while you are 1000’ or so back and the light will start the process of changing to green, and if it is already green it will stay that way for a little extra time.

    You’re welcome

Or some of them may be used to pulling a trailer most of the time and it is muscle memory. Does not make it okay, just a thought

I'm one of those people, but I almost always go in to order. I don't eat much fast food and my brain is filled to capacity with so much other useless shit, remembering what is on a fast food menu is not going to happen. I'm one of those rare birds that actually think about the people behind me. :)

Yes, alot of trailer pullers are in the habit of thinking the swingout helps. The reality is that the swingout doesn't change the turn radius of your most rearward bogey or wheel. What increases the rear turning radius is extending the cab forward as much as possible prior to the turn. Then the rear end will have an increased turn radius.

No doubt. But how many people are self taught pulling work trailers and such that have developed bad habits vs people that have been formally trained and tested( CDL drivers).

Kinda like folks that shoot poorly because they have never had any training to correct the little things that is causing them to shoot low and left.

People aren't even been taught the simplest things like not to drive with brights on always, or that they're allowed to use the damn steering wheel to its full ability.
