I admit I had to look up AFM. Cylinder de-activation. I thought they learned their lesson with the Cadillacs back in the 1980s.
Last GM I bought was in 1992. Fords ever since.
They all have issues of some sort, event the Ford Coyote.
My 2021 F150 hybrid has been in the shop 5 months this year. Software issue, no reliability or driveability problems. I think the dealer and Ford tech support used my truck for a learning experience ;)
They kept me in brand new loaner pickups the whole time, so it wasn't an inconvenience.

Well, we did take a couple of trips, but we had to stay in Texas. If I had been in Rhode Island.....

We did take a trip to Utah, but I got my truck back for 10 days for that, and traded it back for another loaner so they could finish the repair.

Do a web search on Coyote 5.0 class action. Someone in the design team wasn’t paying attention to what GM went through in the ‘70s with the Vega. They took a proven engine and ruined it by using plasma lined cylinders instead of iron sleeves like on earlier iterations of the Coyote, which turned it into an oil burner. Class action starts with the 2018 models

Had not heard of that. My neighbor has a 2019 with a lot of miles and no problems.
As for the Vega, the basic problem was not the silicon-bronze bores. The silicon-bronze wear surface has been used by other manufacturers with no issues. Porsche for example. That said, the Ford plasma transfer coating sounds like a different beast.
On the Vega it was the free-standing cyinders with no deck surface to stabilize the top of the bores. One overheat and they all point in directions other than vertical. The only fix was to sleeve them, and only iron sleeves were available.

both dodge and ford have abandoned the small diesel in their half ton trucks. Only gm remains with a small diesel as an option.
I thought GM dropped their small Diesel? I"m driving a low-mileage Ford Econoline with a 6.0 PSD, I was planning on buying a fullsize GM passenger van with the 4-cylinder Diesel but they dropped everything but a gas V6 and a big V8 and I'm not sure either are decent engines.

I had work done in around 2008 by a mechanic. He told me the 2000-2004 Chevy V-8 engines are the best Chevy ever made. “The car will fall apart around you before the engine fails.”

I have 285k miles on my 2002 Tahoe. And it still runs like scalded dog. I’ve done PM on it since I bought it. I have other issues like the seat falling apart, but so far it’s been awesome.

I’ve had two guys offer to buy it. I have no plans to sell it.

I’ve budgeted for a hardware delete on our two trucks.

I was taking to someone, he said his lifters are frozen in the extended position. Said he was waiting for parts so the dealer could fix it.

I tried to tell him to count his blessings, he didn’t want to hear it.

I’ve also got the 6L80 with garbage torque converters. Yay me

Yeah, I think GM still knows how to make a good V8. But like newer diesel, it’s the mandated emissions crap that’s the problem.

As for the 6L80…it’s decent but the torque converter is junk. I’m putting a new one in the Suburban at the first service. It’s a GM reman (warranty replacement) but the warranty will be up soon, and it’s got the same garbage TC that failed place.

I figure budgeting to fix the known issues is still cheaper than replacing them with new…which will have the same/other issues.

My good friend owns a transmission shop. He showed me the cheap stamped steel converter out of my son's 2018 6 speed that trashed at 118k

They are built to last maybe..100k
.anything over that is borrowed time.
The AFM lifters have ruined the 5.3..it's junk now.
Pre 2012 5.3 or deleted 5.3 is a good reliable motor

Let’s see. Premium price for the diesel motor + higher priced fuel + DEF requirement + the inevitable expensive work on the emission controls were already a barrier to ever break even for the fuel economy gains. Add this now? Looks expensive from a simple labor standpoint

Lol..and GM is doing it again
This is the 100k service on the 3.0 Baby Duramax
    Oil Pump Drive Belt

Well to be fair the ford 3.0 powerstroke also has a timing belt. It’s recommended service interval is at 150k. Mines almost at 125k and I plan to do it then. most in the groups are doing it in the 100-150k range With many opting to do it earlier that recommended from ford because the engine is an interference engine. When the belt breaks, so does the engine.

The automotive peak was about the mid 2000's.
GM’s peak may have been about the mid 2000’s. For the rest of the industry, vehicles are more complex now, but they are significantly better than anything that was available then. More powerful, ride smoother, better features, etc.
