2019 and above Votec LT have all cylinders with AFM lifters
2012-2018 had 4 cylinders with them

People are finding out like I did the hard way.
This is the main reason I sold mine and bought a 2500 Diesel

I see Ram and GM moving more towards the small Diesel in the half ton trucks

Ford and Toyota are sticking with the V6 Twin turbo I guess.

All brands have gone downhill. Gm does screwed up stuff but don’t assume ford is any better. Dodge has been on my radar for a new truck someday but they have a lot of consumer reports of electrical problems.

I think the thing to do is buy a classic. Oh well gotta replace a rear main or water pump more often…at least you can do it.

You're right about the AFM system, it was a dumb idea from the start. However I do find the occasional 5.3 that hits 300k or more without issue. It's usually the I'll change my oil later types that run them low and trash the system. I actually helped a guy the other day with 399k on his original motor but it was a 2500. It was surprisingly quiet and smooth running. He had already gone through one transmission but the motor itself was sound.

Last week I had a Tahoe that had the red oil pressure light on. He had run it over 2 quarts low on oil. Guy does tree work and always puts off maintenance. Told him it takes pulling the heads to fix it and also advised a normal tappet cam conversion. I've had 5.3 heads off many times but now that I'm mobile and independent I don't do them. Juice ain't worth the squeeze for me.

I see a ton of older gen Ram diesels with tunes and dpf deletes. That's the way to go. Another poster is correct about their buggy electronics though. Around 2017 they created a read only system that requires removing the entire center display to install a serial gateway bypass cable to clear fault codes. More dealership fuckery to keep non-dealer techs from helping with basic issues. Couple that with almost all modern cars needing a battery management system reset just to get them to charge correctly with a new battery and it's clear things are going downhill.

I've been running a Range device on my 2018 with 5.3 since day one. I only lost about 1 mpg and the truck runs and sounds so much nicer without AFM. Also junked the stock exhaust with the flapper for a aftermarket Borla exhaust system.
I had a Range tuner on my 2020
    My lifters failed
    $6200

I've ran Range tuners on my 2016 also and traded at 90k

range does disable AFM.but it can't keep those junk lifters from failing
    Range will tell you that
    The failure is mechanical design
    Software can't stop that

In 2019 they put those junk lifters in all cylinders

So you went from 8 ton16 of them
    Double your chances of failure

The government is probably incentivizing the auto makers to make the gas engines as shitty as possible to drive people to electric.
    I would not doubt that
They have backed the power train warranty way down on most of them from 100k to 60k
    They know they won't last

The 5.0 Ford is still decent I think

RAMs gas engine has something similar but I honestly don't know

GM has really f'd themselves with this lifter deal tho

Class action lawsuits are all over now.

Yeah there's no doubt it won't save me if the lifters decide to go as the problem is with the design of the lifters not the management system. At least it doesn't annoy me with that constant shifting and the goofy 4 banger exhaust note.

My 2014 Camaro SS had the 6.2 with a manual transmission and no AFM. The manuals never received AFM, I wish I had kept that car.:(

My 18 gets better mileage without the AFM.

both dodge and ford have abandoned the small diesel in their half ton trucks. Only gm remains with a small diesel as an option.
