That could put a gun shop in a precarious situation with ATF. They sell the gun and not run a background check because the individual has an LTC and they run a check after they leave with the gun and that person gets delayed or denied. if the ATF comes in to do an inspection they would be in deep doo doo for letting that gun go out the door.

”Academy’’ (and, Walmart) employees are notoriously IGNORANT.

”Academy is for Tee shirts, ice chest parts, & lawn chairs. . . . . NOT guns & ammo!”

This has been a common topic on TGT.

The two chain gun stores in my city are Academy and Atwoods. Both have treated me well. Couple of pawn shops have been good. So called gun shops have not been great to deal with. Shop where you are comfortable.

If Academy sold a gun to a customer who had an LTC and didn't do a background check and the customer answered the 4473 correctly, wasn't drunk or making threatening statments, etc., then Academy met their federal legal standards for the transaction. Why would they run a background check AFTER the gun has left the store?

My LGS is has great prices so I haven't bought from Academy in many years. One thing I didn't like was getting walked out to the front door and basically getting told to FO after the firearm transaction.

Between GT Distributors, LGS and the forum classifieds I don't have a reason to buy from Academy.

I almost bought a gun at Academy once. I liked the feel of it in my hand, and how smooth the slide felt and would have bought it if they had let me feel the trigger pull. Employee said he wasn’t allowed to remove the trigger lock for any reason. I explained to him I wasn’t going to buy a gun without feeling the trigger pull. He said if I bought it, I could remove the trigger lock when I got outside, but I couldn’t bring it back if I didn’t like it. I left Academy, went to the closest LGS who had the same gun in stock for $17 more than Academy and tried the trigger pull. Bought the gun and got a new favorite LGS all in the same day. I have not even glanced at the gun counter at Academy since then. I still buy ammo at Academy when it’s cheap enough, but that’s about it.

Hey, if you're not buying firearms at Academy, don't buy ammo from them either!

I've bought numerous guns from Academy and have never had a problem.

Maybe I've just lived a cleaner life than some of you rascals!

The OP figured out what he was delayed/denied, many of the other comments are pure conjecture, as usual.

    Damn................'

People get delayed all the freaking time for no apparent good reason by NICS.....it could be for any reason under the sun or just because they want to f u c k with someone.

I've had LTC holders, Policemen, fire fighters, nurses, even a freaking judge get delayed.........

It is amazing how many comments are made without knowing anything about how the process works or direct experience with the process.

You can call NICS if you get delayed or denied...........

They will not tell you anything over the phone because they can't verify your identity.

They will mail you paperwork to fill out that you send back to them.

They have 72 hours to proceed you or deny..........

If you were delayed you will be proceeded before the paperwork ever gets to you.

If you were denied, in addition to the paperwork they will ask for some legal documents to prove your identity and that you are not prohibited from buying a firearm.

If you were improperly denied, it can take up to (and I've seen longer wait times) a year to get it straightened out.

It is well known that when Academy gets a delayed response they screw the customer around about it.

Truth. I was delayed many moons ago and I have a spotless record, easy to spell name, etc, absolutely no reason for a deny/delay. I attributed it (in my pea brain) to my TWIC application and subsequent federal background check two weeks prior but I'll never know, zero information was provided. My LGS called me when it cleared and I went and picked up my firearm.

Welcome to the USA! I applaud you for exercising your rights and seeking a firearm. Ignore the unnecessary off topic banter, this forum is full of good information but also clogged with fact less opinion...you'll have to learn to sort through that on your own. Be patient, buy a few extra magazines and as much ammo as you can afford, and practice often. You'll get this sorted in due time.

If you get delayed a lot, you can contact NICS, fill out all the proper paperwork/provide the requested documentation and request a UPIN (unique personal identification number). There is a space for it on the 4473 and when they do a background checks it separates you from the bad actors.

Or just get an LTC.......and shop at places that use them in lieu of a background check.
