I ate at the Dining Facility on the post where I worked in Korea a few times. The food was actually quite good - for DFAC food. It wasn't up to even a 3-star restaurant, but there was a wide variety, and plenty of food was available. Even back when I was in (73-93), a lot of young soldiers would rather spend their limited pay on fast food than eat at the DFAC. I never did understand that.
If you ever ate in the mess hall at Fort Polk during the 1860's you would really understand crappy food. The cooks really knew how to screw up chicken which was served several times a week. We drank a lot of milk to get full. We actually looked forward to eating 30 year old C-Rations. :)

C-rats back then? I'd think you guys would've been using hardtack and salt pork back in the 1860's...

    Gotta watch those typos LOL

Back in my early days as an Army brat. We ate a lot of C rations. I actually miss those. Pop loved the fruit cake.

I'm just wondering if you ever got to meet Abe Lincoln back then. And what kind of commander was Grant, anyway? History is skewed on him, but an eyewitness account would be great...
They both seemed like nice guys when I met them. They had different opinions however. :)
It's not nice to screw around with older veterans.

I'm sure that didn't seem so bad after what started that following year...

Just think; if the military hadn't relaxed and lowered standards letting everyone without any real job, school, or life prospects in their 20s, who would be left to serve in the military? I heard they missed recruiting goals by at least 12,000 men, what if they didn't let in fat women who immediately get pregnant?

Would any of you who served in the past sign up again if you weren't in your aged state?

Outside of Combat Arms, the pay is not bad for the minimal amount of work soldiers actually do. You just have to know how to budget, or find a better job with the great work ethic and experience you have…

Food is not bad. Field food sucks, but most soldiers don’t live in the field.

Heck today they get more pay and more days off then I ever got. At least 1 or 4 day weekends a month. Most soldiers are working half day schedules. I have seen our modern . soldiers complain a stripped M4A1 with no optics was heavy. Odd, as I thought an M16 with M203 with IR light, flashlight, and PVS 4 was heavy.

I never got rich in the Military, but that was not the goal. I did get lots of extra pay being gone from my family for years at a time in hostile environments.

That's a damned good question. I would have to say I'd give it a lot of thought. Factor in the aches and pains, and having to deal with the VA now, probably not, all things considered.

If I had my present state of mind hell yes, because I realize that I and my generation could save the republic. With our current mindset, no freakin problem!
