    Same here. However...
I dont think threads should be closed.
    ...this is madness.

There are threads that will devolve into an embarrassing cluster of name-calling and people generally showing their butts. We moderators are tasked with, to a reasonable extent, recognizing those situations and nipping them in the bud. There's no benefit to internecine squabbling being put on display for all the world to see and warp their perceptions of the 2A community.

On TGT, we always let those situations go for far longer than most forums because we believe in a more freewheeling free speech atmosphere. But there are limits. I can't tell you what they are, though. I can only tell you that we know it when we see it and that another BOS thread will reach those limits far faster than a discussion of foreign policy or civilian disarmament.

You say "devolved", i happen to find that term rather offensive.

I prefer to say "alternative evolution"

There solutions for that. Not employing them but closing thread is why train wreck threads continue. You are focusing on the wrong problem by closing threads.

You want close threads? How about starting with threads that are years old? Auto close a thread if no replies after 30 days.

Quite correct. Closing threads is one of them.

You are correct that there are many things that can be done. Choosing which are worthwhile and which are not depends on many things that are not obvious to members but have to do with the economics of the place. And other stuff that's really unsuitable for publicly-visible discussion.

Don't misunderstand me. You make valid points.

Unfortunately, the old mantra of "It's complicated" applies here.

The Harding street thread had been inactive for right at 1 year.

Now, I honestly don't know if closing threads does anything to benefit the Forum.

If not, how would it help anything by closing threads?

Many threads are stale and out of date when they reopened. Some folks who have revived them even made responses to folks no longer with us.
