Introduced late last month, the Online Harms Act, or Bill C-63, would allow judges to imprison adults for life if they advocate for genocide.
One analysis argued that the criminal code written into the law would come with a “maximum penalty of life imprisonment” if you violate the new definition of what is a hate crime. These include “crimes motivated by hatred on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, language, color, religion, sex, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.”
Those who share “hate propaganda” will see a maximum of five years imprisonment, while those advocating or promoting genocide could be sent to prison for life for their words, under this analysis. But the language of the bill is so unclear, it reads like pretty much anyone could be fined and imprisoned for saying anything the government doesn’t like.
