Funny. I was shooting one day when a real brass whore was trolling the range. He had his kids (or grandkids) grabbing brass and putting it in buckets. Two were standing behind me trying to catch my .45 brass before it hit the ground.

I had some people do that to my brass. They stopped when I told them how many times it had been loaded, and how the primer pockets had gotten so loose I didn't need to deprime with a machine, and that the case necks were starting to split...

Back in the big scare when people were scrounging everything they had I had somebodys kids doing that with a bucket, I had to ask them to stop several times.

We got a guy who will pick up everyone's brass at the match, and then bring a token amount the next month saying, "hey, Jim, I found a couple of your .38 Supers." Hands Jim 5 cases. He never "finds" anyone's .40 or 9mm brass, even if it's marked.

there was only one person i let take my brass and thats because he would hook me up with reloads for anything i needed plus he always gave guns away or equipment. got some pretty cool things off that retired seabee. we worked and played together.

I have never had anyone try and take my brass while I am still at the range. The one I go to the most knows I shoot odd calibers and reload so they try and leave me empty lanes around me if they can. I am sure I have picked up someone elses brass, but I don't do it on purpose. Don't walk out with a 5 gallon bucket after shooting a couple hundred rounds or anything like that.

Long ago I was at a range on a slow day and I was pretty friendly with the owner. A few guys showed up and the owner was eyeing the old man with a scowl on his face. The owner asked me if I want to shoot for free and watch the old man while he's changing targets at the 100 yard range.

Sure enough the old man walked around picking up brass while the owner was changing the targets 100 yards away. When he came back I gave him a nod and he went to the old man telling him to drop the brass. He then refunded their money and threw them out. He was really pissed. He said he reloads those brass and the old man's been ripping him off.

He gave me a box of reloads and said have fun.

The range I frequent does not refund the range fee when they tell folks to leave for safety violations or the poaching of brass.

    Be well.

I went shooting at a big sand pit recently and there was a guy there with 2 small kids, all were shooting .22 rifles. After about ten minutes when I got set up, I noticed there was a ton of .223 brass on the ground and when the guy went down to change his targets (set up new cans) I asked him if the brass was his or if he wanted any of it. He said no, it belonged to a truck full of guys who left when he got there. I asked him if he cared if I picked it up next time they changed targets, and he said heck let's get it now before somebody else got it. He and I and his 2 kids picked it all up. Nice guy, nice score. It pays to be nice.

As long as they ask first I don't have a problem with it. I do have a problem with ranges who have the attitude that once the brass hits their ground it belongs to them. I paid for that ammo brass and all.

Once the range operators get to know you, they will even help you collect your brass.

They make some extra money on the side from folks who let their brass lay on the ground, but they will not covet your brass.

    Be well.

I'm sure you can pick up your own brass at any range.

You'd be surprised. When I was stationed in NC the only game within reasonable distance for USPSA was done on a range where you could't touch any brass on the ground when there shooting normally and not doing a USPSA match.

At our local range, the owner keeps brass for reloading. There's been a couple of occasions when I'll sweep up the brass on all the lanes and dump it in his buckets for him. Found out that every so often when I show up I'll be rewarded with a box or so of whatever caliber he has a surplus of. Pays to be nice.

The range I go to is mostly handloaders...it's rare to find anything larger than 22lr on the deck. Most shooters don't let their brass hit the ground; it comes from the plastic box into the chamber and right back to the plastic box.
