That's exactly what I said. And the sad part is your last sentence is probably the sentence that the anti's would play around on with the most, while it is probably, if anything, the only reason this would be the case. But I think it is so low how they are doing this. And it is so low how the Chronicle is portraying the results of the study. If it were number of CONVICTIONS it would be MUCH more reliable and forthcoming, but that would just not be the left wing radical way of doing things, they'd rather obscur the facts while stonewalling or pulling the good ol' race card when you try to call them out on it.

They are expressing the results of their study as if there were a direct correlation between SYG and murder. Kinda funny since SYG is not applicable to criminals, and although it is a law that can be abused by the wrong person with no eyewitnesses, we've seen how Texas handles cases like that just this last week. Raul is going away for life for taking the life of another man and deceitfully trying to use the cloak of laws intended for our protection, to shoot out of anger because of a situation HE provoked himself. Of course he was defending himself when he took the shot, the one guy attacked him, but SYG does not apply when you are the instigator. And obviously by this video this guy was the instigator, and had no problem shooting and killing his neighbor, as long as he thought he could get away with it.

In no way can that screed be considered a "Study" by one of the most prestigious universities in the Nation.

"In their study, Texas A&M associate professor Mark Hoekstra and grad student Cheng Cheng analyzed crime data from 2000 to 2009, finding that murder and manslaughter cases increased between 7 to 9 percent in those states with castle doctrine laws".

Liberals like to classify justifiable homicides as "murder and manslaughter." If Cheng is a Chinese student, then he comes from a place where private ownership of arms are strictly prohibited, but the killing of infant girls is considered "normal."

"Hoekstra said it’s difficult to determine the reason for the increase, but there are a few possible explanations. He said homicides may have increased because more citizens used deadly force in a self-defense situations, instead of being required by law to retreat or use non-lethal force during an assault or other threatening circumstance. This was likely the intended purpose of the law, he said."

    Pure Bovine Scatalogy!

Scientific investigation requires the rigorous study of repeatable phenomena, not speculation as to the cause of a possible outcome.

"The Texas A&M University researchers do not take a position on the statutes, but in the study say that “any evaluation of these laws ought to weigh the benefits of increased self-defense against the increased loss of life caused by the laws.”

Just another example of media bias: The quote itself argues for stricter gun control. I.e., "increased loss of life caused by the laws."

Professor John Lott, the author of "More Guns, Less Crime," did a body of unassailable work on armed citizens and the positive impact they have on declining gun violence by criminals.

Texas A&M must fire Hoekstra and hire Lott!

pure media bias. I never read Chron.com but now I see why. I never will again. Furthermore, isn't it ironic how so many people are SO outraged when thugs start getting killed in the process of being thugs. But it was just "so sad" when it was only law abiding citizens being killed? Now that being a thug is getting more and more dangerous, people are fighting to have laws past to remove that danger, so that honest hardworking thuggish Americans can rob, rape, and kill without having to worry about lowlife law abiding citizens shooting them with a GUN!

It really doesnt matter if its self defense or a right or legal or any of that. There will always be people who dont like guns for what ever bs reason trying to hinder our self defense rights and our hobbies.

    Haters gona hate.

I moved all the way to Texas from California mainly so I could get away from the haters. **** 'em.

Good choice. I love California, the state itself. The scenery is amazing, especially along the coast. San Diego is one of the nicest cities I've ever been in. But unfortunately California is a state in a literal legal hypnosis. They are entranced so deep into liberalism that a couple recently refused to tell their son if he were a boy or a girl, they wanted him to choose for himself what sex he wanted to be. Poor little baby didn't know any better, chose to wear dresses and have long hair and makeup. They thought this was perfectly normal and anyone who said anything about it was called a fascist. Just one example of many why I can't blame you one bit for leaving CA.

As for the haters, I know they are gonna hate. It's when our government starts taking their hating seriously, and passing brainless laws based on stupid people's opinions, it is more than just annoying. I just hope Texas' conservatism stays strong through this plague of liberal fanaticism, literally people walking around living in a fantasy world 24/7.

Poor kid, sad thing is it doesnt surprise me a bit. Stuff like that never really concerned me. Homosexuality, transgender whatever people, hippys and all that. I just cant belive that so many of the same folks that support that are the same people who so strongly oppose me living my life freely and making my own choices..... Kinda silly right? Freedom to choose, racial equality, gay rights, stoner rights, etc. You would think that no matter what the issue, freedom is freedom. I guess they want the freedom to riot and burn my car without getting shot more than to support my right to protect my life and property.

I agree freedom is freedom. I just think that parents denying their kid a fundamental milestone in psychological self identification (something that has been proven by the APA as a vital aspect of a person's psychological growth and understanding of the world around them), is wrong, and goes beyond "freedom" because it is victimizing a child for the sake of liberal's insane unrealistic views on the world. I personally don't care if someone is homosexual, I know quite a few homosexuals in Houston and don't have a problem with any of them because of that fact.

But yeah, just look at the title of the article. Look how chron.com worded it. Sickening, it is so misleading it's not even funny.

Agreed, encouraging your kid to be a tranny is just not right. Raise them like a normal kid. It's the least you can do, most of our parents did it for us. If they turn out gay its their life, they can wear dresses the rest of their life if they want to..

Exactly. But this example does give a glimpse into the mind of a super liberal. If they use this same logic in raising a little boy to wear dresses and have pretty pink bows in their hair, it goes to show how flawed their logic is in everything else. Not that I need to convince anyone in this forum of that, but it is amazing to me that anyone even takes them seriously, especially members of our state and federal governments.

The sad thing is that it came from a&m. What is this world coming to where you get that crap from college station...

We had these sorts of discussions in a philosophy class I took at A&M focused on ethics in society. Abortion, gun rights, suicide, etc. While the whole of the student body is pretty conservative or libertarian, there are still some that identify themselves as liberal. It only takes one to write a study.

We had some interesting discussions in that class. People don't always expect a guy in a Corps uniform to say that he supports the decriminalization of a long list of things because they're a wast of our tax $$$

Lets see, the economy is in the crapper, unemployment is up, crimes such as burglary/theft/robbery are up as a result of this. What is changing is the fact that more people are fed up with being the victim of the thugs and low life's committing these crimes and are arming themselves for protection. The study is garbage unless it goes into detail on the facts of when/how the shooting occurred. Was it to protect someone against car jacking, robbery, etc? The left is mad because they are losing their voting base by getting themselves killed while committing crimes.

Studies like this are always flawed as they cannot measure what did not happen.

How many murders did not happen because the good guy pulled a gun, did not fire it, and the criminal ran away? Without SYG he might have been unarmed, and been a vicitm. Perhaps not a victim of a violent, easy to measure crime, buy something smaller like a simple robbery with no violence?

MOST IMPORTANT TAKE AWAY FROM THIS ARTICLE:

In the wake of the widely covered Martin slaying, state Rep. Garnet Coleman, D-Houston, has vowed to reverse Texas’ self-defense law during the 2013 legislative session. In 2007 , Texas altered its own Castle Doctrine law to say that Texans no longer have a “duty to retreat,” in the home or elsewhere, before using deadly force in a self-defense situation. Coleman was one of 13 in 2007 who voted against changing the law. It had wide support in both the House and Senate.

We must fight this vigorously. Texas has the BEST Self-Defense Laws in the Nation, we must not give this up.

    It is nuts.

For decades thousands of law-abiding citizens getting maimed, raped, killed was A-OK.

Now a couple of thugs get killed and some folks want to change the laws back to favor the the thugs.

I'm sure that they will be following this up with a study on the effects of stringent gun control and the associated rise of murder in cities such as Chicago and Detroit. Should be out any day now..... any day.... soon....
