I readily admit I am biased, the entire system is broken. My wife is in management at a large hospital and tells me what goes on. Their emergency room is filled with non-citizens using it for anything and everything that is wrong with them. Cold, flu, scrapes, you name it, they fill the ER and the hospital is not allowed to turn them away. They have no insurance, give fake names with no ID and the Hospital ends up never being able to collect on a bill. In my opinion, if you ain't bleeding or dying you don't need to be using the ER.

    This.

We talked about this in our department on Monday. Our straw poll thought that they would strike down the individual mandate but leave the rest.

After thinking about it more and more, I think its going to be either leaving it 100% as is, or 100% struck down.

I am sick of hearing Obamacare too, just like I am sick of hearing Bush Tax Cuts....

I was under the impression they can turn away whoever they want as long as it isn't an emergency?

How can we make an informed decision about that bill? It is so long that members of Congress who voted for it admitted that they didn't know what was in it! It was put into play in a hurry, rammed down the throats of the public, voted on by people who had no idea about the content of the law and paid for with money that we don't have. That scares the crap out of me!

Sage, if you read that entire bill, you are the first person that I'm aware of who actually read it.

I'm old and have absolutely no insurance except for Medicare but I don't USE insurance unless pieces of me are dangling by a thread. I don't go to doctors and haven't seen one in over 5 years yet I know of people who milk that system like a cash cow. That's just not right.

If a hospital is receiving federal money, hospitals are required to follow these rules:
    • Every patient must be screened, at minimum
    • The emergency room must assist the patient and not transfer him or her to another emergency room
    • Patients must be stabilized before released
    • The emergency room must treat patients, despite their financial situation
if they turn someone away and something does happen they can be sued. This results in higher costs to everyone to keep the doors open.

Eh, Obamacare is easier to say and gets fewer blank stares.

Why would stevens cave under pressure ? unless he is being extorted. That is one of the reason why the Justices are appointed for life. From my understanding there was no severability put in obamacare, so if part of it is struck down then all of it is. But the Justices could choose to ignore that and just strike down the mandatory purchase part.

And please don't taket his personally, but when I hear someone say Obamacare, I can't help but start to judge them accordingly....
Or maybe not so accordingly. Like I said, I actually bothered to read the law when it was passed... Calling it Obamacare isn't any worse than its proper and misleadin name, or the names supporters of the law like to use like "health care" (as in, "they want to dismantle health care!") or "health care reform". Well, I suppose it's technically a reform law, but reform implies some kind of improvement over the old system.

I can see the current administration trying to use the SCOTUS shooting down the individual mandate as a reason to force a new tax to pay for government provided "insurance'.

The only way now to defeat anything to do with the healthcare law is to vote for Romney and hope that he follows through with his promise to rescind that POS mandate.

He'll do it because he wants a second term. The problem is we need a super majority in both houses or it's a moot point, unless some dems switch over and vote to repeal as well.

The Republican's won't repeal - the law gives them power. Even if they did, the door is open and can't be closed. Eventually, a similar law will pass again.
