Thanks to my inability to read and the fact that I don't take the laptop to the crapper like lalonguecarabine, we may have some assistance on the land issue.

Reading the Polk County penny saver paper I saw an ad for 2430 acres @ $7500. I figured the dollar amount was a typo and I called. As the phone made connection I caught the decimal - it was 2.430 acres and I hung up. He called a little while later and turns out he's a land broker AND a shooter. When I told him we are interested in 10+ acres and 1000yd minimum range, he got pretty damned excited and wants in also. I mentioned TGT and this and other threads for him to look through and he made it sound as if he would. To be fair, he did say the market is not very good right now for large plots. We shall see ...

you really need to figure for at least 20 acres minimum and that assumes it is longer than wide. You pretty much have to dig a pond to make a large berm so that land is not useful for shooting and the space taken up by the berms, shooting line, parking and if you really want to get fancy a shitter with drainage field.

I have been looking into this for many years for shooting my LMGs on since most ranges locally will not allow full auto LMGs and if they do its very short range. I am lucky to have a friend with a ranch to shoot out to 300 yrds with them but its 2 hours away from NE Houston.

If you buy property you can recoup some of the value when its cleared for the range by selling the timber (assuming it has timber on it).

An alternative is rice patty land east of Houston or land in a flood plain which is cheaper too.
