I carry a ruger SP101 in .357 mag 99% of the time. Occasionally, I carry my 2.5" M66 S&W or my Springfield Micro Compact.

What I carry (not all at once, mind you):

    232 Sig (.380).
    Glock 27. (.40)
    CS45 (.45)
    Kimber Ultra Carry (.45)

In my job, I've come across a couple of different self-defense shootings lately. One was a .45, and the othe was a .380, both hitting almost on the same lines, down through the armpit and right across the useful stuff. Single shots, both.

They both worked equally well, near as I could tell. Two dead bad guys, one safe citizen, one safe police officer. Both bad guys died in about the same time frame, both ran away equally as far before they succumbed to their wound.

.380's just fine. Just hit something important when you shoot.

P232 380 in a VM2 is the smallest I carry. Others in the rotation are
    P99cAS 9mm
    P225 9mm
    P239 40sw
    P245 45acp

The P239 and the P245 get the most carry time. The P99 gets the least.

My P228 (9mm) and P229 (40sw) are proving to be just too thick for me to conceal well. So even though I have VM2's for them too, they haven't been carried yet by me.

Next on my carry list to get is a small 1911. Maybe an EMP.

I carry an H&K P7PSP or a colt gov 380. With my gov 380 I can create a lot of little holes quickly in the same spot. For what I anticipate having to deal with when I carry the 380 it is good enough.

I carry a Beretta 96 in a IWB holster when its not to hot (lesse thats about 3 months here in Texas!)... Most of the time I carry a CZ-82 9x18 mak in a pocket holster... Great shooting gun, very accurate, easy double taps and they can be had for around $199..

To the OP, without the semantics of an entire caliber war, the phrase 'something is better than nothing' comes to mind. If the .380 is what you have and it's what you need to make due with, it's perfectly fine. Stay with round-nosed bullets for penetration and as with any SD gun, maintain proficiency on shot placement.

My first carry was a Beretta Cheetah 86 .380. Cool pistol. I could operate that gun in my sleep and shoot the lights out on a bad day. I was 110% comfortable with that gun and it was reliable. At the same time, I'd trade it out for a .38spl snubby when I took the dog for walks around the neighborhood. It depended on what I was wearing or the activity I was doing.

Now I'll be carrying a .45. Reason is simple, that's the caliber my Colt Commander is chambered in.

Don't be afraid to have several guns for carry. The type of clothing, weather and overall situation you're in can make one pistol better suited for that day than another pistol. With this 'multiple carry' option, be absolutely sure you're proficient with the guns/carry method so you don't fumble at a time when you can't afford to fumble. That said, I recognize the argument here that some prefer only one carry gun so as to negate the chance of fumbling.

I vary as to my carry gun. I have a NAA Guardian that is often with me at work for deep conceal, but I also have started carrying a Kel-Tec p11 to work. The rest of the time depends on what I am doing. Getting sweaty, S&W M&P, casual, either Springfield Mil-Spec or Sig p229.

Don't forget the fact that the mighty .45acp will blow a man clean in half! From what I hear some people have actually been vaporized by that caliber. haha, j/k Personally I like 45acp, though I don't feel the least bit undergunned with a 9mm. I prefer 45 though just because I like the way those big old bullets look, and when I shoot something in that caliber it lets you really know it's there, which I find kind of fun. ;)
