Difference is, when I decide I need a thirty round mag, I'm the one that pays for buying and keeping it. When the city or county decides they need an MRAP, I still pay for buying and keeping it.
so you should have to sign off on every govt expenditure? We have a representative form of govt. You elect people...they make decisions on your behalf. If you don't like the decision of the Dallas County Sheriff you can show that at the ballot box. But you live in Pearland so I guess you don't get a say in the politics in Dallas County. Nor do you need worry about paying for their vehicles upkeep.

Yeah I figured you'd try to dismiss the point in general by saying I should shut up because I live somewhere else. You're not going to get very far with those red herrings.

We have tools that can protect officers. The LE agency in question can obtain said tools for free. Yet we shouldn't obtain this equipment, we should let them face dangers without that which could be had...for free. Because? It looks too scary.

Welcome to the mind of a liberal.

Welcome to the mind of a liberal.

So now "Liberal" is an insult.

You seem to be pretty free with the insults for people who disagree with you.

BTW, yes they do have to have a "need" for it. This is not a "right". 2nd Amendment says I don't have to justify a "need" for my choice of weapon. The Sheriff is beholden to the taxpayer and the current Dallas Sheriff has been a disaster already.

    Two things:

    Really? Liberal?

Secondly, if those who are concerned about the militarization of police are liberals...then those who trust in the never ending benevolence of LE agencies are?
I was pointing out that you are using the exact same logic that you poop on when liberals use. It is void of logic. The benevolence or lack thereof in LE is related to this thread?

Not an insult. An accurate comparison. You don't want the DCSO to have equipment because it looks too scary...too military. If the sheriff is doing a poor job, replace him.

The Sheriff is a she. Lupe Valdez. I never said it was scary. You keep making assumptions. I said what need do they have?

You made the assertion the police were outgunned in Dallas. They are not. That sounds like the Media talking.

The media is the one who justifies this stuff because "police are outgunned" and civilians can't have "assault weapons" because "police are outgunned". You've parroted far more "liberal" talking points than I have.

You don't know anything about this area. You're just spouting off because of how you feel. Who does that sound like?

On the other hand, I am asking the government to please explain why they want to spend taxpayer dollars for the training and upkeep for this vehicle. If the police need it, fine. However, Dallas County is not rife with heavily armed criminals. Chances are taxpayers will be paying for this thing to sit in a garage somewhere.

Im moving on as comments have degraded to a level i dont wish to participate.

I will agree, that if the people arent happy they should vote the officials out. We do have control over our elected officials and can hold them accountable or replace them for their actions when they violate the Constitution or go out of the scope we have set for them.

All this because Dallas County got a free MRAP? (that would have otherwise sat in a surplus yard for years, most likely).

No, weve been destroying them or leaving them. Some might make it back to motor pool. But the unit im attached to for a little bit longer was among the last thats cycling through afghanistan and was told to bip them.

Hey folks, let me throw this out here. The paranoia may be well justified.
Example one: When I was a young kid, I was riding my bicycle by a fire station and all of a sudden a siren blasted behind me and I almost wet myself. For many many years I was scared of large red vehicles.

Example two: I used to have a neighbor who was unable to work due to a mental issue so he provided for his family by stealing and cheating. Due to fear of going to jail, Slim would have an anxiety attack or hyperventilate every time he saw a policeman drive by.

Just two possible reasons someone might be dead-set against a fight they don't have a dog in.

Well, if the voters in that area have no problem with the decision, and the machine has already been bought and payed for by the Feds and would otherwise be scrapped for a total lose(including transport), who are you to say they shouldn't have it?

I would fully support my local SO having one and my county ha a population less than the city of Dallas and probably most of the soy rounding cities.

    Their tax dollars, their choice.

Lupe Valdez is to Sheriff's what Obama is to the presidency. She has many unpopular policies, has routinely appeared to be incompetent, doesn't seem to give a damn about her constituents, and yet somehow managed to win re-election (though not by much).

That's a lot like saying you want Obamacare because Obama was re-elected. It's a hell of an assumption.

Again, there may very well be a legitimate reason why DCSO thinks they need this vehicle, I just haven't seen it yet. DCSO primarily runs the local jails and patrol rural areas. They do have jurisdiction to patrol in the various cities but they do not serve warrants in those cities. In fact, most warrants for the County are served by the County Constables, not DCSO.

When the excrement hits the whirling blades, no matter where it occurs, those involved call in the folks with the knowledge and equipment to handle the problem. Lots of small law enforcement agencies in the Houston area do not have a SWAT team so when they run up against something they cannot deal with, they call someone who does.

Matters not who owns what as long as it is available to roll when and where it is needed. How can anyone argue against that..... doesn't EVERY industry have the number to the 'big guns' in case of a disaster?
