Way better Huckabee is leading this poll than Romney, Ryan or Christie.

That was my main takeaway. I guess I should've expanded my initial post. I intend to vote and spread the word about either Rand or Cruz depending who looks the best when the horse race starts. If I could make one king it'd be Rand. Cruz seems to complacent with the NSA stuff for my liking. If the libertarian wing cant get some solid primary wins I'd much rather have Huckabee who seems to be at least somewhat genuinely conservative and willing to do at least some major reforms vs statists like Romney, Ryan, Christie and the rest of them.

Lot of money in the enforcement side of it, too. Lots of gear to be sold... lots of classes, too. I mean, if a department can't drop a few million on shiny new Chargers that will fall apart at 60,000 miles, what good is having police departments?

Yes and in the court system and on and on.

Back on the original topic though, who can we get behind that has a chance of rising to the top of the GOP? How can they do it without the mainstream party support and without any kind of respectable media coverage?

    Sen Mike Lee
    Sen Rand Paul
    Sen Ted Cruz

Who else is out there, what factions do they have supporting them and how can they move up in the GOP when the party hierarchy doesn't want them there?

I'm about as loyal to the GOP as they come, but if they nominate Chris Christie or any other RINO, I might have to vote 3rd party and just hope the lunatic statists burn down the asylum quickly so we can rebuild sooner than later.

That's the thing, the statists have a stranglehold on the party. None of the liberty candidates has a snowball's chance in hell, especially since the primary process is catered to those of a statist bent. No candidate that will stand up for us will get through with the way the system has been constructed.

    The ballot is dead.

There's a reason voter turnout - especially among right-leaning voters - was so low in 2012. It's been declining steadily.

Do we only vote for those candidates that we think will win? Or do we vote for the best candidate? If everyone voted for the one they think will win, he or she probably would win.

If everyone voted for the best candidate instead of the one propped up by the RINO party he or she just might win. Blame those voting third party for not sucking it up, or blame those not willing to vote for the best candidate because they are scared he will lose?

Imagine if everyone who voted Romney only because they thought it would keep O out of the White House had voted third party......I bet the GOP would have done a major rethink and we would either have a much better GOP candidate or a 3rd party candidate with a damn good shot of winning.

Good candidates aren't rising to the top because we are not supporting them, it's simple as that.

He's an entertaining talk show host, but not presidential material me thinks... I don't even really enjoy his show anymore after he chastised Ted Cruz for breaking ranks of the good ole boy club in one of his monologues. He's just another status quo, statist republican.

Ignore the "presidential election" and focus on taking Texas back. Ignore the so-called Federal Government (which isn't legitimate since it ignores the laws that created it) and let's just be Texans. Nothing more and certainly nothing less.
I agree. I'm to the point where I don't even give a crap about the federal government. It's going to implode sooner or later and we should be focused on making Texas strong enough to withstand the temper tantrum the federal bureaucrats are going to throw during the death throws of their fading power and influence.

Heck lets get through 2014 first.. We gotta keep Texas red!
Totally agree. There is a lot of national pressure to turn this state majority blue.

I wont vote for huckabee, run Rand and I will.
Question: Assuming RP runs, I can see voting for him in the primary. But if Huckabee wins the primary, what will you do? Just not vote? If so, to me that is just like handing to the dems.

A better strategy, at least IMO, is to make your statement in the primary, but get behind whomever wins that for pres. And on your list of 3, i'll take RP.

By reading this thread, I can see others don't agree, but I believe even a RINO in the WH is better than a liberal dem, so if it come to it, and Huckabee 1) runs, and 2) wins the primary, I'll get behind him all the way.

Yes, in the short term, but then we keep sliding towards big government without ever moving the other way, without ever addressing the problem.

A typical RINO is categorically worse than a liberal dem. If it had been McCain or Romney pushing for a govt run health system, amnesty for illegals or gun bans the republican house would've rolled over. With a dem even the congressional rinos that may agree with the stance will generally at least offer some level of resistance.

Exactly. That's how we ended up with TARP, Patriot Act, TSA, DHS, etc... I'd rather there be a democrat in the white house with congress acting as an obstruction than more big government legislation being voted "yes" down party lines.

If you really want to influence federal politics we need to absolutely crush this movement to turn Texas blue. If we even turn a shade of purple, it will mean the democrats will win every presidential election in the foreseeable future. We need to make like St. Patty and drive all the snakes out of our state. That includes both progressive democrats and statist republicans.

Huckabee is unelectable. Conservatives like him because of his positions, but the guy has no charisma.

    We need new blood. Desperately.

We also need some candidates that we don't have to choose ONLY because they are not as revolting as Hillary or the current Commie-in-Chief.

Not sure yet what I think of them, but a couple of names as possibilities I heard on news talk yesterday were Jeb Bush and John Kasich.
