Wait, does the firearm in question have the serial number filed off or did it just not have one in the first place (i.e. was build before 1968)? There is a world of difference between those two situations, the latter being no issue whereas the former being a big one...

All we know is the gun doesn't have a number but it's old enough to not have one. No clue

As stated above, there are many older guns that have no serial numbers. It is fairly easy to tell if they were removed. When guns w/o serial numbers come through the shop they are listed as NVSN....(no visible serial number) on the books. It is not a big deal. You could NFA it, but it would have to have a serial number put on it to BATFE specs of your choosing.....+ any other required engraving. If a serial number was removed or altered in any way.....I won't touch it....guns that have been polished and refinished you can you can usually still see faint serial numbers....

Too bad we'll never get another 1968-style amnesty. No serial numbers? Numbers filed off? Felon in possession? Demonstrably stolen machine gun? All that stuff was completely forgiven back then. We'll never see the like again.

This ain’t the shotgun I’m interested in. How’s the 500 barrel changeout coming ?

Didn't happen. When it's too good to be true, it usually is...

I got a gun like that after a family members death. It was a boot gun with all markings removed. I gave it to a gun dealer friend and he removed all usable parts and destroyed the rest of the gun aka 10 year trip to the fed pen free card. I watched him take a chop saw to it.

Weather it was legally the right was to deal with it I don't know but the end results were the same, a destroyed illegal gun. Only this way I didn't have to take a chance that the person or agency I reported it to was a soulless pos and give me a hard time over doing the right thing.

Serial numbers were first required on "some" guns with the NFA in 1934. The problem with no serial number would seem to be a problem only if it had been "removed". Not if it never had one. To add a serial number could also be a problem if it were interpreted as "altering" the serial number. For that reason alone, I'd never consider "adding" a number to the gun.

    Yup.
    What he said!

    Old, sans S.N., no problem.
    Removed S.N. a felony.

Adding a S.N. reserved for special situations like finishing an 80% receiver or SBRing a very old gun.

    When in doubt......RUN AWAY!!!!

    Hypothetical:
If someone gained possession of a gun that didn't have any serial numbers or defining markings (brand, caliber/gauge etc.) could they put their own serial number on it and register it? Not a homemade or 80% gun. I'm talking, brand made but someone filed off all the markings.

    As mentioned:
Never had a serial number = fine
    Removed serial number = felony
Serial number are required because of GCA-68, prior to that unserialized guns were common.

The "Gun Control Act or 1968" mandated firearms manufactures stamp a serial number. Prior to that firearms did not have to have a serial number even though many did anyway.

Well that leaves a boat load of un serialized guns in the form of home built or finished. If you make it you don't need no stinkin numbers on it.

I have a Savage .22LR/.410 ga over under that was my great grandfather's gun which has no serial number. I also have some 80% lowers for the AR15 that has no serial number.
