Depending on your shooting ability, the most bang for the buck is the Springfield Range Officer. A guy I shoot Bullseye competition with is using one with nothing more than a trigger job, and is shooting in the Expert class at matches. I have several 1911's ranging from hand made bullseye guns to Les Baer. Buy the Springfield, and use the rest of the money to buy reloading equipment and ammo. I would bet money that you will shoot the 1400 dollar gun the same as the 750 dollar gun.

Like someone else said here, at your price point the Springfield TRP + ammo is a good starting point for a new 1911 user. It will run well, has a magwell to help with mag loads until you become proficient, and has an excellent warranty. If you have a good amount of 45acp already, the Les Baer (Thunder Ranch) is an excellent choice too but it's pretty much bare bones/all business. I really like mine.
It seems like a hit or miss situation in the QC department with Kimbers and Sig 1911's though ...Just in my experience.
Good luck with which ever you choose. Careful though, 1911's quickly become an addiction. ;)

The Springfield TRP is a solid gun under $2k.

Another that I was extremely impressed with are the Dan Wesson Valor series. They are semi-custom guns, very well built, and have a lot of little custom touches normally only seen on high dollar custom 1911's. The Dan Wesson Specialist is also another nice one, if you don't mind a light rail.

I shot a Colt New Agent and a SIG 1911 compact just a few days ago and I have got to say its really turned me on to compact 1911s. Very accurate for the size, and even in .45 its a lot of fun to shoot.

Rock island is on the bottom of the 1911 line IMO, but are more affordable.

    Dependable and accurate

Though I've owned several different brands over the years, these are the two I currently own. Both are 100% reliable and both will print a 2 inch 5 shot group at 25 yards. And both cost me less than 500 bucks brand new.

I am guessing the OP has found a 1911 by now.

But to answer the question, in my opinion, STI and Les Baer would get some serious looks. $2000 opens some doors in the 1911 world.

I just picked up the Rock Island 3.3 tactical II....and 50 rounds down the barrel so far....highly impressed. I own a couple Springfields as well. I like them too.
