Never been there before, hope no one was injured by fire or some ammo going off.
    :(

Ammo that goes off in a fire normally wont even penetrate warm clothing. Without something to build pressure behind the projectile and keep the case from going in the other direction there isnt enough energy. When i was a firefighter i had round hit my fire gear and fall right off, even ended up with a projectile in my pocket that fell in after hitting my arm. The fire started in a guys reloading room. The noise is still unnerving though.

If was 6 years ago and due to improper design under the ownership of the man before Jim took over early in the 2000s.

And how does a person firing a tracer make it their fault?

    As it was described/reported:

Four-alarm fire engulfs Dallas shooting range | wfaa.com Dallas - Fort Worth

Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said a shooter at the range admitted firing an unauthorized tracer round. The small flare that is part of the round apparently triggered the inferno.

"It flares up a little bit, and whenever you fire the insides of that backing at a gun range, they can easily catch that backing on fire," Evans said.

I have been there and got my CHL there. Never liked the feel of how they operate and charge newbies to use the range and guns and ammo.
    Insurance anyone ?

They should not charge new shooters? That is an interesting business model.

And yeah, the owner hired some guy to fire tracers into his range. Why would you question the integrity of the owner? I know him personally, and your suggestion is highly offensive.

    "Unauthorized Tracer Rounds?"

Within the past month or so, one of the few 5.56mm rifle ammo Academy had for sale was tracers packed in a 20 round red box. I told a shooting buddy of mine to wait for fires to break out any time.

If you read it again I said "how" and surely I was offended to when I had to pay by the box to shoot.

I just caught that on the news here in Houston. No mention of tracer rounds on the news I just watched. Maybe I have wrong info, but isn't the longest shooting distance there 25 yards..? If so, I wouldn't think a tracer round would ignite in that short of distance..

Depends on how the tracer itself is made. IIRC, one type of tracer actually ignites along with the powder when the round is discharged, while the other type is ignited by friction created by the air passing over the bullet's tip.

The first type is what you're likely to find marketed to civilians (especially in .22LR, like the stuff Piney Mountain makes), while the latter is (again, IIRC) more commonly used by the military as indicators, either for directing MG fire or telling/reminding a rifleman when he's down to his last few rounds before he'll need to reload.

As far as the tracer issue goes, I agree it was probably some idiot (notice I didn't say newbie) that found some cheap tracer cheap ammo and decided to shoot it indoors at DFW.

A friend of mine and his wife taught CHL and Hunter Education classes at DFW for several years. Occassionally I would assist when they needed help. DFW was not the friendliest place to shoot, but it was okay. I am sorry to see it go. The DFW owners told my friends they intend to rebuild and sue the shooter who caused the fire.

Last year I saw a few posts on this site where people were asking if tracer rounds were legal to shoot in Texas. It seems a few people had found access to surplus tracer ammo. Several of the responders were regulars on this site who claim to be "knowledgeable". As we all know Texas is in the clutches of a severe drought. An type of incendiary round should be considered a no-no (indoors or outdoors) by any responsible shooter. I am as cheap as the next guy, but I would never consider shooting tracer rounds. I fired enough of them when I was in the Army and I know what damage they can create. We started a small forest fire during a M60 machine gun "field of fire" training session while I was at Ft. Gordon, Georgia during Advanced Infantry Training.
There are millions of non shooting people in this country and when they learn of incidents like the DFW fire, it tends to reinforce the current political trend that all gun owners are idiots and we can't be trusted with our firearms. It is going to take each one of us acting responsibily to change the current public trend. I hope we all learn from what happened at DFW and be more responsible ourselves.
