I am in the middle of reading Gordon Sinclair's "Khyber Caravan" about his travels in the lands of present Pakistan, Afghanistan and north India and published in 1936. It is simply astonishing and incredibly vividly written, but then Sinclair was an acclaimed reporter for the Toronto Star in those years. His boots-on-the-ground description of the aftermath of the great earthquake in Quetta on May 31, 1935, is some of the most disturbing disaster reporting I have read -- and I am an old newspaper wire editor.
In looking into Sinclair, he went on to be a successful broadcaster, and in 1973, he recorded the following commentary, now largely forgotten. Much has changed in the intervening half century, but it is nice once in a while to hear good things about our country especially given all the hatred and criticism directed at her. Take a listen:

And by the way, Sinclair's commentary was so popular that it was recorded on vinyl as a single, and Sinclair donated all the proceeds ... to the American Red Cross.
