A great movie about the Soviet Afghan war

Wow, this movie is realistic as hell. Guy lights off a belt of ammo on his PKM till he runs dry, then grabs it by the barrel and swings it at a Mujahideen, only to burn his hands by the still hot barrel. You'd never see that much accuracy and detail in hollywood.

Wasn't that short lived? Or didn't they eventually take it back?

Own both 9 Рота (9th Company) and The Beast (also known as The Beast of War), both are excellent movies about Soviet involvement in Afghanistan.

Rambo III comes in a distant third...:P

Charlie Wilson's War was a good book, but also a bit of storytelling if you get my drift.

My friend who suggested this movie also told me about a 5 part series about the Chechnyan war which has some of the same actors. It is called stormgate.

Yeah, pretty much all of their conquests were short lived. They were great at conquering, but terrible at empire building.
