I sure thought I would see hell freeze over before this would happen.

They do not give shit about the NRA or the 1A. They just do not want to see the same tactic used against them:

Substitute Planned Parenthood or the Communist Party for the NRA, and the point is clear. If Cuomo can do this to the NRA, then conservative governors could have their financial regulators threaten banks and financial institutions that do business with any other group whose political views the governor opposes.

They are right to fear it being used against them. And the other groups it listed.
If it stands, the people in power, regardless of which party, suddenly have a LOT of power over anyone that speaks against them. All the way to the federal level.
That is the last thing a liberal wants when they are not in a firm position of power.

I won't bother to restate it here but several of you will remember my tales of trying to convince people in the commercial porn industry that if they wanted to hang onto their favorite part of the Bill of Rights, the 1st Amendment, then they were natural allies with folks who valued the rest of the Bill of Rights, including the 2nd Amendment. Back in the 1990s I tried to talk various people in the porn industry lobby into at least talking to and finding common ground with the NRA but they hated the NRA and guns so much they wouldn't consider it.

So I have some experience with this and that experience leads me to conclude that even if we want to ridicule and minimize their motivations, it's a good thing for the ACLU to stick up for people with whom they disagree.

Hang together or hang separately, folks. Standing firm against authoritarianism requires we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with people we don't like.

I remember they stood up against the no fly list and having it connected to firearms purchases a while back.

    Not a huge surprise.

That's fine. I don't promote the censoring of people I dissagree with for the same reason.

Ben, I was not trying to belittle them for standing up for the rights of the NRA. Or gun owners in general.
I am no a huge fan of the ACLU. Too often they consider us the problem when we are not. But some of the things they fight for also bleeds over to us whether they intend for it to or not.
Constructive help is exactly that. No matter that it comes from someone you like or dislike. It is still constructive help. And they are right. If it is allowed to become standard practice against us, then it WILL be used agianst other people they like better. And they know it. If part of the Constitution is allowed to be ignored for certain groups now, it WILL be expanded later until there is none left.

As distasteful as it is, sometimes, the only two choices are join forces with someone you don't like or lose.

I would prefer not to lose.

This. Self interest typically has a way of making things work out for everyone in the end. As long as folks are honest about it...
