Im having an issue finding a program that will open ESRI shapefiles. Im helping a friend do some mapping and the web based website that we have been using is a POS... it is works when it wants to instead of when I need it to.. ive got over a 1000 plots to map and it is taking forever. Ive got a copy of the map on my computer but no way to edit/convert it... My idea is to convert the polygon shape file into a raster file like PNG, JPG, BMP...etc so I can use a different program on my computer to plot the map, IF that is even possible due to the differences in formats... It is basically only for visual reference and presentation.

    Any ideas would be great.

You should be able to convert the shapefile to KML and then open it in google earth. PM me, I'll see if I can do the conversion for you.

If the KLM doesn't work, send me a PM. We can get it going. The web hosted programs are crappy but some free downloads should still be available.
KLM sounds like the best 1st shot.

You can download a trial version of ArcGIS from the ESRI website. But it's heavy duty software, non-trivial for those who don't use it often. You might also poke around and see what you can do with ArcViewer.
