I think CMMG sells bargain bin rifles only several times a year. They have minor defects in something, which is why they are in the bargain bin, but it shouldn't be anything that affects operation. I don't think they are that great of a deal anymore.

If you want to build, DSA has some cheap uppers. All you need to finish the build is a complete lower and a bolt carrier group and charging handle.

Delton is putting out a M4 type upper with the 1/7 twist and optional chrome lining. Of course if you aren't planning on shooting anything in the 70+grn range then the 1/9 twist will work.

Take a look at Spike's Tactical:

    ST-15 M4 LE Carbine [STR5025-M4S] - $799.95 : Spikes Tactical

They are tested to meet "mil-spec" standards and comes complete to shoot at $800, although it appears they're delayed for a bit of time according to that page.

For fairly extensive information (and trolling) about AR-15s, you should check out AR15.Com - Your Firearm Resource. (AR-15, AR-10, M4 Carbine, M16, H&K, SIG, FNH, FAL, AK-47, 50 Cal, M1/M1A, Handgun, Pistol, Training, Hunting, and More!). If you can get past the BS threads, there's some good info about the AR from top to bottom, including optics and accessories.
