See if he'll let you take it to the range and put 100 rounds through it first... Is the chamber chrome lined? What twist is the barrel? Does it have M4 feed ramps?

Lower hardly matters, DPMS parts kit is good.

I doubt that's an old M16 military upper. There were a bunch of old M16A1 uppers on the market a while back, and they do pop up from time to time, but I haven't seen an A2 upper like this. If it's an old military upper, no way does it only have 1500 rounds through it total. Maybe by him, but definitely not total round count.

Shop around, wait on some deals here and there and you should be able to build the same thing for about the same price, but with all new parts. I think I built my A2 for about $700 with a DPMS upper. (Non chrome, of course.)

Dude - there's an AR on this board right now for less than that....IMO, he's high for a parts gun, especially one w/little known history.

    ETA - sorry - I lied, it's listed for $800....but I still think it's a better deal, IMO.

AR's have been going back down lately. I would go with a new complete gun from Armalite, DPMS or S&W. All can be had for $850 or less. It will be worth the extra dough you spend on one of them. You will forget about the $200 difference once you shoot it.

I'd save up some more money and get a new rifle. Some of the other members got some good ideas. Me, i'd save for M&P15, they usually go for about $700-900, depending on which type.

If you want this rifle, check the barrel for any signs of erosion and bolt carrier group looking at the condition.

    Good luck man.

thanks for all the advice guys.

i have considered the mini14 option, and will probsably go with a mini30 instead of jumping on an AK, but i really like the idea of the AR platform, not only the modularity, but also it is the classic 'good guy' gun. lol.

perhaps i'll look around a bit more, and see what i can figure out.

i am really wanting to go 'second hand' on this, i had my sites set on a CMMG bargain bin rifle, but it seems like such a PIA to order from them i jsut never took the plunge.

    *shrug*

i guess i'll get a few listings print them out, staple them to the wall, throw caution to the wind get drunk, and throw darts till two land on the same one.

then go with that one ;)

good advice. that is somethig i forgot to ask about, when i inspect the peice, what specifically should i be looking for as far as signs of wear?

what are some things to look for that would indicate a "new" part, as well as an 'old' part.

pictures with little madden lines and circles welcome!

Are you trying to stay "under the radar?"

A complete lower isn't that hard to find for less than $300 (really I bet you could find one for quite a bit less). A brand new DPMS from midway USA can be had for less than $400 (especially if you wait till they are on sale and use a coupon they have occasionally). Spend a little more money and get something nicer

Your basic bravo company upper that I got put me out 530 (including the bcg which runs ~$140), plus you have to buy handguards (I really like my magpul ones I got yesterday the middy's run ~40 with shipping the carbines are a bit cheaper and quite a bit more avalable).

I guess what everyone is saying is that the price of the "new" stuff and the used stuff isn't a whole lot different. It seems the gun has a lot of unknown history (# of rounds fired). The barrel looks pretty thin and who knows the twist rate. I think I like my 16" a lot.

I don't think anyone should ever get an A2 unless they darn sure know they want one. You can always put a carry handle on an A3, its just frustrating if you want ot put a scope on your A2 (in my experience as a person who doesn't trust his self to work on his 1k rifle)

    +1 to this idea.

If you want an AR without the paper trail buy a lower FTF and then order a good quality upper. BCM is hard to beat for the money.

You talking about the MOE handguards? I have a set on my carbine and love them. So has everybody else that's picked the rifle up. I think they might be some of the lightest handguards you can buy... They're definitely lighter than the standard stuff.

yeah, I just got a mid-length. I haven't been able to take them to the range just yet. Something about 80 and 90 hour weeks. I might get to take it out in a couple weeks. They are light (and they look cool!!). I kind of wanted something that I could put tacti-crap on later if I got the itch without being too heavy.

Not too expensive either. I'm very happy with them.

Same here. It looks like more manufacturers are starting to notice weight and take steps to reduce it. I'm seeing more modular rail systems (where you can add and subtract rails) over the traditional systems that add 2-3 lbs to your rifle just so you can hang a flashlight and grip on it. Much better now that we can put as much rail as we need and no more.
