I've been tossing around the idea of building a .22 caliber AR Pistol. Similar to the HK 416 22LR Pistol or the S&W M&P 15-22 Pistol.

What can be used to "plug" the buffer tube threads on the back of a lower receiver? I considered modifying a buffer tube but I would rather use something that looks nicer.

This is just a "for fun" build because my research has shown that it's far less expensive to just buy the complete pistol The H&K is only around $400 through CDNN Sports. https://www.cdnnsports.com/hk-416-22lr-pistol.html?___SID=U#.Wuegypch2M8

So, this build is going to be done with left over parts or stuff I can get cheap.

I already have the CMMG .22 LR conversion bolt kit. This is probably the most expensive item on the build.

(btw, does anybody have a cheap 7.5" barrel and/or 7" handguard?) lol

Spikes Tactical has a plug that does exactly that. It's not listed on their website these days but send them an email or call and they'll take care of you. $20 and has QD built in as well.

    Overdue update:

I finished the build and have been very happy with it.

Built for around $400 but $200 of that was the CMMG .22 conversation bolt. (Which I use in my other rifles also.) Also, you can get the CMMG conversation kits for $150 sometimes.

Most of the upper is a Davidson Defense pistol kit. (5.56)

The lower is an ATI polymer. I’m happy with it. It’s milled great. It looks nice. It’s light. And inexpensive. The threads and other wear points are metal reinforced and it comes with anti-walk set screws for the trigger and hammer pins.

The lower receiver plug is from Brownell’s. After several failed attempts to make my own I bit the bullet and paid the $25 for it. Ouch.

I’ll provide better pics if I think about it later.

Very nice. How's it shoot with the conversion kit? What kind of end plate is the sling attached to?

I've been thinking about doing a similar build with the 4.5" CMMG dedicated barrel and bolt.

The first time I used that kit in this build I had some ejection failures. The last time I fired it and I had ZERO issues. I haven’t pinned down the exact cause of the issue the first time. The kit is not new and worked fine in my rifles.

Then end plate is an inexpensive one that I ordered from Delta Team Tactical. About $4. Works fine.

id like to make one, but will prolly just use an empty pistol buffer tube... easier to brace

I think the fun thing about a .22lr AR pistol is that you can use the plug and actually have a pistol instead of having he tube hanging off the back.

I’d love to have a 9mm AR pistol that also didn’t require the tube. Again because I want an actual pistol type firearm.

I have a .22LR pistol (tec22) that is fun to shoot one handed.

However, I find the AR pistols neat because they have that front handguard.

By the way, I cannot find a dedicated upper in stock anywhere. CDNN has that 416 on sale for $350, too.

Now you’ve got me thinking. I’m trying to remember if there is a mfgr out there with a pistol type recoil setup. Was it Olympic?
