Hunt with an auto, and make it Italian. Staying on the bead and making follow-up shots is critical. The really small chance of a feed problem with today's dependable Italian autos, and good ammo, is dramatically outweighed by your ability to calmly stay on target, with lighter recoil, and make more kills. After buying a dependable autoloader (BERETTA XTREMA II), I'll never go back.

I've also heard some good things about the cheap Mossberg auto (930?)...

But I'd still nod towards a pump for self-defense. though, I'm wavering.

And doubles are still fun for upland game & skeet.

Recently bought a Mossberg 590A1, and love it. Have taken it to the range several times to pattern about 15 different loads. Shoots very well and is easy to use. I have a particular problem with being right handed, but left eye dominant, so I especially like the safety being center mass on the back of the receiver, and the way the gun sets for me. Also did lots of data search before I bought it. As good as the Rem 870 is, their QC has been questionable for the last several years. The pump is easy, and reliable, and less expensive.
