I have a buddy that owns a SBE3. He said that he has fired a lot of shotguns, and this was the best. Is he right, or just talking up his choice?

I would like a recommendation for a shotgun. I have a Maverick 88 and a Kalashnikov KS-12, but those are not what I would take to events.
    Uses: Clays, duck, turkey, dove.

I would like to not spend ~$1700 if there is something comparable. I mostly want a soft-shooter because as I get older, my shoulder has less appreciation for a good mule-kick. So I guess what I'm saying is the $3000+ shottys are out of the question. I'm not shooting in competitions.

Anyone think the Versa Max deserves to be in the conversation?
Also, what about optimal barrel length? I'm guessing at least 28"?

All I can really add is that my SBE II is the nicest shooting shotgun I have ever fired. Low recoil and it fits me very well.

I haven't fired many high end shotguns but if I ever need to replace my SBEII it would be with another II, III, or even a 3 1/2" Vinci. Money well spent.

Inertia guns are not soft shooters despite Benelli’s hype.
In fact Benelli doesn’t make any soft shooting guns.
I trap/score a lot of corporate sporting clays fun shoots.
The Benelli inertia guns fail to fire 2 3/4”, 1 1/8 ounce loads more than any other gun.
If you really want a soft shooting shotgun buy a gas gun.
